The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

Promoting sustainable and responsible enterprises is about strengthening the institutions and governance systems which nurture enterprises – strong and efficient markets need strong and effective institutions. Enterprises are eager to find innovative ways to approach the challenges and opportunities as presented under the Future of Work Initiative. The Enterprises Department is at the forefront of the dialogue with enterprises and their workers so that human, financial and natural resources are respectfully, equitably and efficiently used in order to achieve innovation and enhanced productivity for competitive markets and prosperous societies.  The Enterprises Department’s work areas cover Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, Multinational Enterprises, Employment Injury Protection and Green Jobs.

The position will be located within the Global Employment Injury Programme (GEIP). The ILO's (GEIP) is anchored in the Enterprises Department to strengthen the synergies between ILO’s know-how on employment injury protection and on enterprises. The ILO's GEIP is focussed on insurance and social protection in case of work injury (GEIP) to promote better conditions in the world of work through adequate, sustainable and affordable employment injury benefits along occupational prevention and safety. Through its GEIP, the ILO will lead policy debates at the global level, namely in the context of global fora such as the G20 and others, and deliver technical assistance to design, implement and assist reforms to improve employment injury protection for all workers. It works in close partnership with other ILO units, such as Better Work, and OSH units and others.

Learning Area

As an intern in Global Employment Injury Programme, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas such as the analysis for establishing, extending or reforming employment injury insurance schemes and/or to strengthen the prevention and operational framework relevant to employment injuries in ILO member States.

You would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in the following tasks: assistance with the preparation of training materials on legal, financing and administration of employment injury insurance schemes including their prevention and inspection and other inter-related actions at the enterprises’ workplace level; learn methodologies and techniques for analysing the legislative framework and in modelling the current and future cost and the financing of employment injury insurance schemes; and about the principles which should guide the development and extension of national social security systems which include employment injury insurance schemes.

Under overall guidance of the Head, Global Employment Injury Programme Unit and programme specialists, the intern will perform the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the research to survey country experiences with employment injury insurance pricing and experience rating;
  • Conduct research on national social protection schemes, with particular focus on benefits and coverage in the event of accidents at work and occupational diseases, with the aim of supplying a bank of good practices
  • Contribute to the research to survey country accident incidence rates by sector and occupation groups;
  • Targeted involvement in multi-disciplinary working groups (actuaries, doctors, lawyers) to discuss national measures to meet the requirements of the ILO Conventions related to employment injury insurance
  • Contribute to the preparation of a toolkit aimed at assisting States and social partners in bringing their laws and practices in line with the ILO's fundamental principles in the field of employment injury scheme
  • Support to the global campaign for the ratification and application of Convention No. 121 (benefits in the event of accidents at work and occupational diseases). In this context you will be invited to drafting working, research and analysis papers to identify the extent to which the countries targeted by the campaign are in compliance with the provisions of the Convention and what, if any, areas in which corrective action should be taken ;
  • Contribute to the preparation of project proposals and support to project implementation;
  • Support to the implementation and maintenance of the Global Employment Injury Programme website.

Interns should expect to devote 10 per cent to 20 per cent of their time to administrative tasks.

Required qualifications
Education

Law, occupational safety and health (OSH), mathematics, engineering, actuarial science or economics.The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of a graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago (mandatory).

Experience

Any relevant work experience and knowledge in a policy area related to employment injury and prevention would be an asset.

Languages

Good knowledge of English is required (both oral and written); knowledge of French, Arabic or Spanish is an asset.

Competencies

Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and be able to work in a team. Experience in quantitative research or policy and data analysis would be an asset.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2245 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2245 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
