ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:

(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Department

The International Labour Organization (ILO) Enterprises Department’s (ENTERPRISES) mandate is to promote sustainable enterprises for innovation, growth, more and better jobs. ENTERPRISES department delivers its mandate through the work of its six organizational units: (i) the Cooperative unit; (ii) the Multinational Enterprises and Enterprise Engagement unit; (iii) The Green Jobs Programme; (iv) the Social finance programme; (v) the Global Employment Injury Programme – Insurance and Protection and (vi) the Small and Medium Enterprises Unit (SME).

Within ENTERPRISES mandate to promote sustainable enterprises, the SME unit seeks to unlock the potential of creating more and better jobs in small businesses - a sector where the bulk of employment is being provided. The Women’s Entrepreneurship Development (ILO-WED) programme is a key programme of the SME unit. The programme supports the implementation of the ILO’s strategy on promoting women’s entrepreneurship development1. It does so by assisting ILO’s constituents address existing gender imbalances in enterprise development in order to help women entrepreneurs secure a job for themselves and for others, while overcoming various barriers in developing sustainable and flourishing businesses.

The intern will:

  • Assist in technical advice to development cooperation projects, especially in developing communication, monitoring and evaluation, and sustainability plans;
  • Support the animation of ILO-WED communication platforms including the ILO-WED wed page and social media accounts;
  • Update in a regular basis the status of certified trainers in ILO-WED tools;
  • Review, edit and proofread various learning products, reports and documents;
  • Participate to fundraising activities to reinforce, scale up and expand ILO-WED interventions;
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned
Learning areas

As an intern in women’s entrepreneurship development, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas as laid out in the ILO-WED strategy focuses on four pillars: (i) development of a knowledge base on women entrepreneurs; (ii) development of a variety of support services for women entrepreneurs and their service providers; (iii) support to advocacy in favour of WED; and (iv) development of internal and external partnerships.

You would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in initiating, sustaining and guiding cooperation with key ILO-WED stakeholders and partners, to ensure that women entrepreneurs’ needs are taken into account in planning and implementation of ILO-WED initiatives.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required profile
Education

Master level degree in gender, economics, business, communication or other relevant social sciences. The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago.

Languages

Excellent command of English, French or Spanish. Working knowledge of a second language would be an advantage

Applicants should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, have good communication skills, and be able to work in teams.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2245 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2245 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
