You are applying to the ILO generic internship roster, which is published several times per year. The roster will be made available to all departments and field offices, which will then select and directly contact suitable candidates only.

ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:

(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

**Please note that you can apply to a maximum of three internship profiles during the current application period. If you apply to more than three internship profiles, your application will not be considered for any profile.** Note that you may withdraw your candidature at any time via the Jobs Applied section of your profile.

It is highly recommended that you submit your application as soon as possible to avoid last minute technical issues or delays. Late applications will not be considered.

The ILO values diversity. We welcome applications from qualified women and men, particularly those with disabilities and from non - or under - represented member States. If needed, reasonable accommodation will be provided in the recruitment phase as well as during the internship to promote equality of opportunities.

IMPORTANT:
Please only apply for an internship if you fulfil the following two criteria:

(1) You have no close relative serving in the ILO.

(2) This is your first internship with the ILO (only one internship is permitted).

Department

The Employment Policy Department is responsible for promoting full and productive employment by developing integrated employment, development and skills policies that are inclusive, gender sensitive and sustainable. The work of the Department is guided by relevant ILO Conventions and Recommendations, robust analysis and evidence. At the global level, the Department promotes policy frameworks and partnerships that aim at generating more quality employment opportunities, and contributes to and advocates for knowledge and capacity building on employment-related issues. At the country level, we support ILO constituents to develop, implement and monitor coordinated and context specific policies and programmes for more and better jobs, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups. The Department delivers on its mandate through work in three Branches: Skills and Employability; Employment and Labour Market Policies Branch; and the Development and Investment Branch.

The Employment and Labour Markets Policies Branch (EMPLAB) has the primary responsibility for the organization of integrated country labour market diagnostics and employment policy reviews, facilitation of tripartite policy dialogue employment policies, policy development and implementation, labour market policies including activation and intermediation and employment services. The EMPLAB Branch is responsible for policy research, technical cooperation and advisory services to member states in developing and implementing comprehensive employment policy frameworks to realise employment in rich and inclusive growth. The Country Employment Policy Unit (EMP/CEPOL) provides technical advice to the ILO tripartite constituents for the formulation of National Employment Policies (NEPs) and strategies in support to the priorities defined in the Decent Work Country Programmes in response to requests from ILO constituents; and contributes to the promotion of national, regional and international policy coherence in making employment central to social economic and international development strategies. Particular emphasis is laid on the gender dimensions of macroeconomic, employment and labour market policies.

The Intern will be working with the EMP/CEPOL Unit at the EMPLAB Branch, under the overall supervision of the Employment Policies and Gender Specialist.

Learning areas

As an intern in the CEPOL Unit, you will have the opportunity to be exposed to a whole range of subjects since macroeconomic, employment and labour market policies are multidimensional and relate to various development frameworks of the ILO. In particular, you would be gaining experience in working with specialists who are involved in identifying the gender dimensions of these various policies and in making the case for the development and implementation of policies that contribute to producing gender egalitarian outcomes. Your tasks will be assisting the specialists by reviewing literature, gathering information, analysing data and writing concise reports on policies – including macroeconomic and sectoral policies –, programmes and enterprise-level interventions that have a proven impact on improving women’s outcomes in the labour market. You will also learn by participating in knowledge development and dissemination and the organisation and delivery of capacity building activities.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required profile
Education

An advanced degree in Economics and/or Development Studies. The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago.

Experience

Relevant work experience in research and data analysis in the field of gender and economics and/or gender and development would be an advantage.

Languages

Working (both oral and written) knowledge of English. Good knowledge of French and Spanish an advantage.

Competencies

Applicants should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, have good communication skills, and be able to work in teams.

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).

The ILO does not charge any fee at any stage of the recruitment process whether at the application, interview, processing or training stage.
