1.      Organizational Context

 

  1. Organizational Setting

     

    The Brand and Design Database Section is responsible for the WIPO Global Brand Database and Global Design Database which include millions of records from the collections of Madrid, Lisbon, Hague and Paris 6ter emblems and from an expanding number of national collections contributed by IP Offices with whom agreements of cooperation have been reached. These databases offer advanced Trademark and Industrial Designs search functions to the public, are used by thousands of users daily and are essential components of WIPO’s Global IP Infrastructure on the internet.

     

  2. Purpose Statement

     

    The purpose of the position is to support data warehouse performance and quality by planning, delivering and monitoring data integration pipelines.

  3. Reporting Lines

     

    The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Head of the Brand and Design Database Section.

     

  4. Work Relations

     

    The incumbent will work in close cooperation with Division managers and other members of the Global Databases Division.

     

2.      Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

 

a.   Deliver data integration through the implementation of shared data warehouse and manage the exchange and storage of data.

 

b.   Assist in the data coverage expansion of the Brand and Design Databases by designing and implementing high performance data extraction, transformation and loading pipelines.

 

c.   Examine and analyze data sources by communicating with data providers and IP Offices to propose and implement best practices for data integration.

 

d.   Produce high quality, clean code that is easy to maintain and evolve whilst providing testing procedures and technical documentation on operational procedures and data connections.

 

e.   Design and implementation of testing procedures to ensure optimal quality and integrity of the integrated data at all times.

 

f.    Improves operations by conducting systems / data analysis and recommending changes in workflow and procedures.

 

g.   Take ownership of Global Brand and Design search indexes and propose ways to improve and optimize overall performance.

 

h.   Maintain technical expertise by keeping up to date with new technologies and new tools and make proposals to supervisor.

 

i.    Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

 

3.      Requirements

 

Education

Essential

First-level university degree in information technology.

 

Essential

At least six years of relevant experience in working as a software engineer.

 

An advanced university degree in the above-mentioned discipline may be accepted in lieu of two years of experience.

Desirable

Experience in High Performance Parallel computing with Python. Experience with modern development practices with CI/CD. Experience with application containerization and orchestration.

 

Experience with OpenCV for image manipulation and analysis.

 

Good experience in data cleaning and restructuring.

 

Comfort working on a NIX command line and reading/writing Bash.

 

Comfort working with modern web applications technologies such as single page applications built on the MEAN stack.

 

Experience working in an Agile environment.

 

Language

Essential

Excellent knowledge of English.

 

Desirable

Good knowledge of at least one other UN official language.

 

Job Related Competencies

Essential

Excellent software development skills in Python.

 

Working knowledge of best practices for automating and monitoring batch jobs.

 

Sound knowledge of LUCENE-based search engines internal working and optimization.

 

Solid experience in NoSql database management.

 

Extensive knowledge of XML parsing and transformation.

 

Excellent analytical, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work under multicultural environment with technical, legal and operational staff at different levels.

5.       Information

 

Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice.  The figures quoted below are based on the August 2019 rate of 80.0%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
