Job Description

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster.

IRC has been working in Ethiopia since 1999 and is implementing integrated, community-managed programs aimed at improving the quality of lives and recover of livelihood of disaster-affected population’s through promoting individual participation, strengthening institutions and emergency response. Currently, IRC is operating in the Oromia, Benishangul, Tigray, SNNPR and Somali regions on Emergency Response, refugee’s assistance and livelihood projects.

Job Overview

In response to Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in East and West Wollega, the IRC proposes an emergency program which encompasses protection through establishing women and Girls friendly space, implementing psycho-social support activities, immediate dignity kit assistance, awareness raising and capacity building activities.

Community Well-being Initiative Assistant will be responsible for supporting implementation of emergency protection project through selection of women and girls, participate in dignity kit distribution, follow up of safe space constructions, and conducting awareness raising activities.

This position will based at Nejo, West Wollega & Bello, East Wollega. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in Selection of women and girls friendly space establishment site through consultation with government bodies in coordination.
  • Follow up the construction of women and girls friendly space to ensure timely completion of the construction and start of psycho-social support activities.
  • Recruit, supervise and follow up social workers formal and informally to ensure quality psycho-social support activities is implemented in women and girls friendly space.
  • Organize targeted awareness raising activities to sensitize returnee community on Gender Based Violence issues and available services and support.
  • Support in organizing project launching and close out workshop with government structures, community leaders, and other service providers.
  • Support CWI in capacity building training to BoWCA, health, legal and other service providers on GBV topics.
  • Contribute to the developing IEC/BCC materials to aware the returnee community about the negative consequences of Gender Based Violence and to encourage positive practices.
  • Participate in assessments to identify protection need of women and girls in the project target areas.
  • Actively participate in coordination meetings and raise protection concerns of women and girls at field level, if any.
  • Prepare and submit internal report and support in the preparation of donor report.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities including field visits to other field offices that can be given by immediate and technical supervisors.

Qualifications

  • BSc Degree/Diploma in Social Work, Sociology, Women’s Studies, or other Social science related field.
  • 1 year for BSc Degree and 3 years for Diploma holders.
  • Experiences in social service provision for women & adolescent girls.
  • Able to maintain Gender Based Violence and protection principles at all times.
  • Strong interpersonal and coordination skills required.
  • Confidence in discussing intimate gender and sexuality issues.
  • Willing to base and frequently travel to project field sites in East and West Wollega to Nejo, Sasiga, Bodji Dirmeji and Leta Sibu.
  • Able to prioritize multiple tasks and maintain attention to details.
  • Ability to communicate in English, Amharic, and Afaan Oromo languages skills is required.
  • Familiarity with local context of the project implementation areas is an advantage.
