Organizational Setting

The Forestry Department of the Food Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is organizing the 15th World Forestry Congress (WFC), which will take place in the Republic of Korea in 2021. The Congress main aims are to\:

  • clarify why it is so important to recognize forests and forestry as an integral part of sustainable development – from local to national and international levels;
  • identify, analyse and raise awareness of the major issues facing the sector and propose new forms of technical, scientific and policy actions that will result in forests’ greater sustainability by linking sound policy to feasible practice;
  • serve as a key venue in 2021 for the world’s foresters – from decision-makers to local practitioners as well as partners from other sectors – to share their knowledge and latest findings, in a forum that will allow for challenging, constructive and sometimes controversial debate, the exchange of experience and views, and the fostering of collaborative partnerships and networks;
  • provide a global showcase for the latest developments and innovations in forests and forestry, using multi-media learning platforms to illustrate their practical applications and linkages
  • ensure that critical issues are visibly addressed and that all key stakeholders, including young people, women, indigenous people and local communities, are given a platform where the voice of the constituencies they represent will be heard.

The post is located in the Office of the Assistant Director-General, Forestry Department.

Summary of Duties and Functions


Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director-General, Forestry Department, and in close cooperation with the Organizing Committee of the 15th World Forestry Congress, the Associate Secretary-General will be responsible for the following tasks\:

  • oversee FAO preparations of the Congress;
  • collaborate with the Secretary-General on overall preparations for the Congress;
  • serve as FAO focal point and Liaison Officer for the preparation of the Congress, being responsible for coordination between FAO, the Organizing Committee, international organizations and other concerned institutions and organizations based outside the Republic of Korea;
  • prepare the technical programme of the Congress, including the working arrangements, the timetable of the meetings and the agenda of the plenary and technical sessions;
  • draft\: a) the rules of procedure of the Congress; b) the regulations for the presentation of the Congress documents; and c) the list of official documents and invited papers to be presented at the Congress;
  • coordinate and finalize the preparation of the documentation of the Congress, including its outcomes/proceedings;
  • supervise staff assigned to assist with the preparation and operation of the Congress;
  • carry out other tasks assigned to him/her for the successful outcome of the Congress.

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in forestry or a related field of study;
  • Extensive relevant experience in the forestry sector, including broad international experience and experience in organizing international meetings;
  • Demonstrated leadership, managerial and supervisory skills and a strong sense of responsibility
  • Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish;
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional contracts with government officials and international organizations;
  • Well-developed communication and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work effectively with a diverse.
