The CERN & Society Foundation was founded in 2014 by CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, to spread its spirit of scientific curiosity for the inspiration and benefit of society.

The CERN & Society Foundation operates nationally and internationally to pursue its mission, across three main areas: Education & Outreach, Innovation & Knowledge Exchange, and Culture & Creativity.  Additional information is available at:  https://cernandsocietyfoundation.cern.

The Board of the CERN & Society Foundation is responsible for the overall governance, strategic direction, management and administration of the Foundation and its assets, and takes decisions on all matters concerning the Foundation according to the provisions set out in the Articles of Association. In particular, the Foundation Board shall represent the Foundation in dealings with third parties; establish and oversee the budget and the financial planning; oversee and assess the management and administration of the Foundation; and approve the annual accounts. Besides statutory responsibilities, the Board provides leadership to develop and maintain the CERN & Society programme of activities as a recognised international cause for support; it also inspires supporters and other key external audiences with CERN & Society’s mission. The CERN & Society Foundation Board meets typically 3-4 times a year.

The selected candidate will integrate into the CERN & Society Foundation Board, with the following responsibilities:

Governance:

·         Fulfil legal responsibilities of governance and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.

·         Agree and adopt budgets and financial targets, supporting executive staff through clear guidelines.

·         Ensure ongoing engagement, communication and cooperation in all matters with the CERN management.

Strategy-setting:

·         Oversee strategy-setting, direction and tracking for the Foundation in order to support CERN’s future plans in the three areas supported by the Foundation.

·         Support the agreed growth and development of the Board, including identification and cultivation of potential successors.

·         Help devising and adopting the overall impact strategy and goals of the Foundation and related CERN & Society projects.

Fundraising:

·         Make CERN & Society a charitable priority within the fields of science and education.

·         Participate in formal meetings and important fundraising occasions where appropriate and possible.

·         Help identify sources of support and make introductions where possible, for example for a specific project within the CERN & Society portfolio, or for an industry sector.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate has the following characteristics:

·         Is an informed and passionate ambassador for CERN & Society.

·         Is an acknowledged achiever/leader in own field/profession/social peer group.

·         Has strong personal networks and the ability to enhance and extend CERN’s spheres of influence and reach.

·         Has the ability to contribute to fundraising efforts.

·         Has knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following fields: scientific outreach & education, innovation & knowledge exchange, culture & arts.
