Introduction

The Better Utilization of Skills for Youth through Quality Apprenticeship (BUSY project) is an initiative being financed by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL), and implemented by International Labour Organization (ILO) in partnership with the Ministry of Labour, the Federation of Kenya Employers and the Central Organization of Trade Unions. The project is being implemented in three Counties in Kenya – Kilifi, Busia and Kitui.

The project’s objective is to improve the capacity of Kenyan government, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and civil society organizations to establish and expand workplace-based training programs with a focus on vulnerable and marginalized youth, in particular adolescents at or above the legal working age who are engaged in or at risk of engaging in child labor.

BUSY project is seeking interested and qualified Kenyans to fill an internship position in the area of communication and documentation. This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya with frequent activity information sets from project implementation sites in the counties of Kilifi, Busia and Kitui.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall responsibility of the Director of the ILO Country Officer for the United Republic of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, the Communications intern will work under the direct supervision of the BUSY National Project Director. In addition, the intern will work closely with the members of the project team and other key partners.

Learning areas

The intern will gain knowledge and skills in the following broad areas, among others: project management, work based training concepts, apprenticeship development, policy development, research and analysis, establishment of coordination institutions or structures, functioning of coordination institutions, managing stakeholders’ expectations, project monitoring and evaluation, budgeting, finance and administration.

Duties and Responsibilities

The primary role of the intern will be to support the project in capturing, preparation and dissemination of information and communication materials and documents, and contribute to the implementation of the project and delivery of outputs in the assigned areas through the following tasks:-


a) Information / data Capture

  •   Attend events and capture high quality photographic images, audio and video messages of project activities and maintain a detailed and well classified catalogue of key messages for future reference.

b) Information preparation

  • Edit selected photographic, audio and video messages for quality or relevance on project activities and develop related storylines to articulate specific project themes or messages addressing targeted audience.
  •  Attend project meetings, participate and. contribute towards development, finalization and implementation of the ILO BUSY project communication strategy

c) Documentation of communication materials 

  • Write stories, articles and briefs about events as well as current affairs about project activities; develop case studies on project activities including joint activities with key stakeholders or implementing partners.
  • Liaise with communication departments of key stakeholders and media with regard to project activities to alert them on key project events that require publicity.

d) Information dissemination

  • Liaise with communication units of ILO Country Office in Dar es Salaam or any other ILO Office as may be necessary in order to explain, clarify or articulate messages as developed by the project.
  • Monitor ILO BUSY project presence in the media and keep track of articles written about the project activities in Kilifi, Busia and Kitui counties or any other part of Kenya.
  • Participate in the development and uploading content to project website or other social media network in order to ensure relevance and project visibility.

e) Any other duties

  • Undertake any other relevant duties that may be assigned by the Project Manager/Director.
Education

The candidate should be enrolled in the final year of a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme or equivalent) OR must have completed at least four years at the university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree – Social Sciences, Economics or Public Policy/ Administration or Development Studies, Communication, Media or related studies

Eligibility

This vacacny is open to Kenya Nationals or Residents of Kenya only, who have not undertaken an internship with ILO or have previoulsy worked for the ILO

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), field offices will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department or field office within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the field office for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend:

As an intern in the field, you will receive a monthly stipend from the ILO based on the cost of living in the area of the duty station, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive the appropriate stipend per month. Your travel to the duty station will be at your own expense.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
