Contract Duration

Interns are required to work full time for a period of six months. Internship placements shall not be extended beyond six months.

Organisational Context

The Language Services Unit (LSU) forms part of the Services Section providing critical, close support functions to the Office of the Prosecutor in order for it to fulfil its mandate. In this respect, during the preliminary examination, investigation, and prosecution phases, the Unit provides field, event, and telephone interpretation; transcription of audio and video material; translation of OTP evidence and core Office documentation; as well as other services requiring language expertise, such as summarising, redacting, and editing.

Duties & Responsibilities

The incumbent will work in the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) under the broad supervision of the Language Coordinator. The incumbent will perform one or more of the following duties:

  •  Assist with workflow processes and databases in transcription, translation, interpretation and/or terminology;
  • Support workflow processes and research in sourcing, recruiting, inducting and hiring language staff and experts;
  • Participate in the assessment of language tools and systems, and support the development of improvement projects across the Unit, including the LSU Intranet page and e-learning tools;
  • Contribute to research into linguistic issues and to the development of guidelines, best practices, trainings, workshops, webinars, learning materials, etc.;
  • Perform other related duties as may be required by the Language Coordinator.

Essential Qualifications

Education:

All candidates must have a degree in translation, interpretation, linguistics, law or any other related field or be in the final stages of their studies at a recognised university. Candidates are expected to have a very good record of academic performance. 

Experience:

Internship placements focus on candidates in the early stages of their professional careers therefore; practical experience is not an essential prerequisite for selection. However, practical experience that is relevant to the work of the Court may be considered an asset. 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments;
  • Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively);
  • Has acquired a good standard of computer skills, especially with MS Office and language tools;
  • Maintains a service-oriented attitude at all times.

Knowledge of languages                                                                                                         

Proficiency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of a situation-related language of the Court may be considered an asset. Knowledge of another official language of the Court (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) would be considered an asset.

Remuneration

Please note that the ICC is not able to provide all participants in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme with remuneration, nor is it possible to provide reimbursement for expenses incurred during the internship or visiting professional placement.

Applicants should therefore be able to support themselves for the duration of their internship or placement. 

Limited funding may, however, be available through the ICC’s Trust Fund for the Development of Interns and Visiting Professionals, which receives donations from States Parties and other donors to fund nationals of States Parties from developing regions. These donations are equally divided between the four Organs of the Court.

If funding is available, the Human Resources Section shall assess a candidate’s eligibility in accordance with the terms of reference of the Trust Fund as agreed by the donors. 

In order to be eligible, the applicant must, among other criteria, be a national from a country that is a State Party to the Rome Statue and appears on the United Nations Statistics Division’s list of developing regions.

Candidates eligible for funding shall receive detailed information and further instructions after the selection process is finalized. Stipends will always be agreed at the time of offering the internship. No funding will be provided at a later stage.
