Introduction

The position is located in the Security Unit of the Internal Services and Administration Department (INTSERV). INTSERV is part of the Management and Reform Portfolio and is responsible for the general management of facilities, property and inventory; safety and security; printing, publishing and distribution; diplomatic privileges; travel and transport; the use of public spaces; and general internal services. The purpose of the Security Unit is the delivery, on a rotational shift basis, of security services for safeguarding the human and physical assets of the ILO at headquarters.

The incumbent will be required to provide, on a rotational shift basis, security services for safeguarding the human and physical assets of the ILO. This is an entry-level grade requiring training and experience. The incumbent will work as a member of the security team and will receive instructions from his or her immediate supervisor. The incumbent will be expected to work according to established schedules, including night and weekend work and during public holidays.

The incumbent will report to the official responsible for security at headquarters and the Head of Security, who will be their second-level manager.

Duties
  1. Check documentation in exchange for entrance passes for admission of visitors in accordance with building and ground access control procedures.
  2. Greet and provide information on locations of meeting rooms etc. to ILO staff, delegates and visitors and reply to telephone inquiries.
  3. Operate closed circuit video/electronic equipment. Undertake regular surveillance ‘rounds’ to ensure the security of the premises of ILO headquarters.
  4. Alert the security team and follow first-level emergency health, safety and security procedures in response to incidents. Ensure fire suppression and first-aid intervention in case of incidents.
  5. Participate in regular training drills focusing on ongoing security procedures and practices, building systems monitoring and emergency responses.
  6. Provide security services during ILO conferences.
  7. Complete required forms and routine and standardized reports and records.
  8. Perform other duties as required.
Required qualifications
Education

Completion of secondary school education or equivalent.

Experience

Two years of professional experience in a security capacity. Fire suppression and first-aid certificates required.

Languages

Good knowledge of one of the Organization’s official languages (English, French or Spanish) and basic knowledge of a second.

Competencies

In addition to the ILO core competencies, this position requires: 

Familiarity with the security and equipment systems and procedures used within the ILO or other UN organization security environment would be considered an advantage. Ability to understand and follow instructions and work procedures. Observation skills. Cooperation, team spirit and orderliness. Good understanding of the work to take initiatives in getting routine tasks accomplished.  Ability to provide direction and guidance to co-workers. Courtesy and tact in dealing with others. Ability to reply in an appropriate manner to inquiries. Ability to use computer for data entry and producing simple reports. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to demonstrate gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.
