Special Notice:

A Short-Term Appointment is used to recruit staff to meet short-term needs. The duration of this assignment is provided above. The maximum duration of a short-term appointment including extensions shall not exceed 12 months.

A Short-Term Appointment does not carry any expectancy, legal or otherwise, of renewal and shall not be converted to any other type of appointment.

Due to the short-term nature of the assignment, the ICC reserves the right to make an appointment at one grade lower than that stated in the vacancy with a modified job description.

A current ICC staff member who is holding a fixed-term appointment may apply for any short-term position. Where a current ICC staff member is selected to a short-term position, he or she will be temporarily assigned to the position in line with section 4.10 of ICC/AI/2016/001. GS-level posts are subject to local recruitment only.

The terms and conditions of service for staff members appointed under a short-term appointment are governed by ICC/AI/2016/001.

Organisational Context

Provision of high quality language services for the efficient conduct of Court business: The Language Services Section (LSS) provides language services to the organs of the Court, i.e. translation, revision and editing of Court documents; consecutive and simultaneous interpretation for meetings, trial hearings, press conferences, specialised seminars, diplomatic briefings and other events, held in-house or away from the seat of the Court; assistance and guidance in terminology and references, management of language tools to make sure that consistent terminology is used in all the organs of the Court; recruitment, training, and accreditation of interpreters needed for work with Registry officials in the field and/or at the seat of the Court; provision of relevant information to service users to make them familiar with all the types of language services provided and with the procedures and requirements of the professions in question.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Assistant Translator (Sango) will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Situation Languages Translation Unit/Senior Reviser.  The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • To translate, under close guidance and supervision, documents from Sango into English or French and into Sango from English or French on a variety of subjects (legal, administrative, technical and general);
  • Provide audio translation into Sango as required;
  • Contribute to terminology and reference databases;
  • Perform other tasks as required.

Essential Qualifications

Education:

Advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, linguistics, law or any other related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

A minimum of two years (0 years with an advanced level university degree) of progressively relevant professional experience in translation, interpretation or linguistics, preferably in an international organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of topics dealt with by the Court, e.g. legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters;
  • Excellent eye for detail, accuracy, style and usage;
  • Sound knowledge of relevant computer software, e.g. MS Office, TRIM, Ringtail and CAT tools;
  • Proven ability and flexibility in working to deadlines effectively under pressure with evolving tasks and priorities;
  • Ability to work effectively and constructively as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team;
  • Ability to keep strict standards of confidentiality;
  • Openness to skills development.

Knowledge of Languages:

Mother tongue proficiency in Sango and a good command of in English are essential. Proficiency in French is required.  Knowledge of another CAR situation language may be considered an asset.
