The Syria crisis is often described as the worst humanitarian catastrophe since the end of the Cold War. Inside Syria, 7.6 million people are internally displaced and 12.2 million are in need of humanitarian assistance, with 4.8 million in hard-to-reach areas. There are 4 million Syrian refugees in neighboring countries. This is no short-term humanitarian episode. The devastating human consequences to huge numbers of people will endure for decades. The destruction of relationships, communities, livelihoods, homes and infrastructure will take years to repair.

IRC is offering a robust humanitarian response to the Syria crisis. IRC is undertaking programs in Syria in the fields of health, protection, and economic recovery and development.Our work in these challenging settings gives rise to some of the most pressing issues facing contemporary humanitarian action, including questions of access, security, funding and coordination.

High-quality Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs provide the foundation for children’s future academic success, health, prosperity and wellbeing. A large body of scientific evidence emphasizes the need for increased investment in early childhood, particularly for children experiencing conflict, crisis and displacement; these children are extremely vulnerable to the long-lasting effects that prolonged stress has on the developing brain.

In December 2017, Sesame Workshop and the IRC were awarded the MacArthur Foundation’s inaugural 100&Change grant to make real progress toward solving a critical problem of our time. With the extraordinary investment of $100 million, our partnership , through Sesame Seeds Project, will transform the language, early reading, math, and social-emotional skills of a generation of children ages 0-8 affected by the Syrian war. Focusing on children in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria over the next five years, the plan combines the depth of in-person services, reaching 1.5 million children, with the breadth of mass media, reaching 9.4 million children. The Sesame Seeds project will be implemented in four courtiers (Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq) with interventions targeting caregivers and children.

SCOPE OF WORK

IRC delivers its programming in Northwest Syria through a range of partnerships with Syrian NGOs, as well as with a team of IRC monitors. The ECD program, in particular will be delivered through integrating the ECD content into existing IRC’s programs in Protection and Health.

A key aspect of the ECD program is capacity-building support, provided by IRC to its partnership network and staff inside Syria. Due to the remote context, IRC delivers the majority of its training remotely, via e-Learning materials. There is an existing senior e-Learning Manager who is responsible for providing technical support to the team to enable them to provide effective remote capacity-building. The role of the translator will be to translate videos from Arabic into English and the training tools from English into Arabic and vice versa. The translator will report to the senior e-Learning manager, and will work in close coordination with the Early Childhood Development (ECD) unit (who will provide the curriculum for the training materials).

Main responsibilities

• Ensure translated content conveys original meaning and tone
• Prepare subtitles for e-learning videos and online presentations
• Translate other e-learning tool such as: training material, facilitator guidelines, survey...Etc.
• Cross-reference specialized dictionaries and translation tools to check quality of translation
• Consults with subject matter experts and other colleagues in order to understand specialized concepts and translate them appropriately
• Proofread translated texts for grammar, spelling and punctuation accuracy
• Edit content with an eye toward maintaining its original format (e.g. font and structure)

WORK ENVIRONMENT / term of payment:

This service contractor is based in Amman with standard office work environment (8:30am – 5:00 pm) with daily payment (50 JOD) and it is required signed timesheet.
