Education: Post graduate degree in one or more of the following disciplines: Nutrition, Public Health, and/or relevant

Public Health and Nutrition field.

Language: Fluency (level C) in English language.

Knowledge:

Current knowledge of the latest developments, guidelines and standards, and technology in the field of nutrition,

especially in the prevention and treatment of maternal, neonatal and child undernutrition.

Demonstrated capacity in community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) approaches.

Demonstrated well-prepared analytical work, well-managed programmes, and proven teamwork abilities,

including communication and advocacy skills.

Concise and informative writing skills, good communication skills, ability to plan and organize work under tight

deadlines, and ability to work independently and efficiently.

Excellent computer skills in Word processing, Excel, PowerPoint and familiarity/experience with SPSS, EPIINFO,

ENA and standard software packages and systems.

In the Northeast Nigeria states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, ongoing violence is affecting the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. The conflict continues to undermine social stability and economic development due to the scale of displacement, disrupted livelihoods and diminished agricultural production due to the protracted nature of the crisis, which has consequential impact on the food security and nutrition situations. Almost three million persons are facing hunger, and it is estimated that up to one-million children under five years may be acutely malnourished, and 1.1 million pregnant and lactating women require access to nutrition services. The insecurity is causing mass movements of people, with 1.92 million living in camps or host communities within Nigeria, and tens of thousands seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. Many of those who left the country are now returning, and need food, shelter and support for livelihoods.

Across the three affected Northeast states, the nutritional situation remains worrisome. Central Borno and northern Yobe are respectively facing a serious and critical nutrition situation, as defined by WHO, with global acute malnutrition (GAM) rates ranging from 10 to 16 percent. The food security and nutrition situation is particularly worrisome in Yobe State. The prevalences of GAM (13.3 percent) and SAM (2.5 percent) among children 6 to 59 months living in Yobe State are amongst the highest in the Northeast states. The prevalence of chronic malnutrition is 65.2 percent and only 1.4 percent of children 6 to 23 months in Yobe State meet the requirement for a minimum acceptable diet.

Under its new CSP 2019-2022, WFP currently provides emergency nutrition and food assistance to more than one hundred thousand beneficiaries in Yobe State. The WFP preventative nutrition approach delivers both nutrition specific and nutrition sensitive interventions aimed at preventing and managing malnutrition amongst the most vulnerable populations: young children and pregnant and lactating women. With an emphasis on children under five years and women of reproductive age, and highlighting the critical 1,000 Days ‘window of opportunity’, the WFP malnutrition prevention (BSFP) and treatment (TSFP) programmes aim to stabilize and improve the nutrition situation, and support multisectoral linkages with health care access, and improved water, sanitation and hygiene practices, underscored by the provision of IYCF and nutrition education and delivered through SBCC.

In 2019, WFP initiated a small scale, facility-based programme in Yobe State for the treatment of MAM (TSFP). Implemented through the Yobe State Primary Health Care Management Board, and in collaboration with UNICEF, the TSFP activities are delivered through the community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) approach. Additionally, WFP will also support a C4C (Cash for Caregivers) pilot in Yobe State, which will provide mothers of inpatient SAM children with hot meal vouchers and nutrition education, hygiene and health promotion sessions.

Under the technical supervision of the WFP Damaturu Sub-Office Head of Nutrition Unit, the Nutritionist  will participate in the overall design, coordination, implementation and monitoring of nutrition activities.

Specifically, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:

• Support for the implementation, monitoring and coordination of the WFP malnutrition prevention activities through a Blanket Supplementary Feeding Programme (BSFP) approach;
• Support, through technical assistance, the Yobe State Primary Health Care Management Board (YSPHCMB) for the implementation, monitoring and coordination of the pilot WFP Targeted Supplementary Feeding Programme (TSFP) activities;
• Support reviews of the BSFP and TSFP activities, and provide technical assistance in the ongoing revision of the national CMAM guidelines with a focus on MAM management.
• Support the WFP Damaturu SubOffice nutrition sensitive programming, and closely collaborate with the  Programme Unit (general food assistance, livelihood, gender, M&E and VAM) to ensure synergies in the development and implementation of WFP activities;
• Support the WFP Cooperating Partners in the development, implementation and monitoring of , communitybased IYCF activities, as part of the BSFP activities; and, support the development, implementation and monitoring of nutrition Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) activities;
• Ensure timely and quality monitoring and evaluation (M&E), supervision and reporting of all nutrition activities, in close coordination with the WFP M&E team; and, provide technical support to nutritional assessments, data analysis and the drafting of reports and recommendations;
• Assist in the review of nutrition proposals and budgets submitted by WFP cooperating partners; ensure timely and effectively implementation of the Field level Agreements (FLAs), as well as the MoU with YSPHCMB, in close collaboration with the WFP Partnership Unit;

• Ensure optimal visibility of WFP nutrition activities, including meetings, field visits, success stories, etc., through close collaboration with the WFP Communication and Information Management Units;
• Represent the WFP Damaturu SubOffice at relevant technical meetings and coordination fora on nutrition, food security, health, and in the social sector;
• Provide ongoing support to the WFP Damaturu SubOffice in its coordination with government, UN agencies, donors, and other relevant stakeholders.  
• Support the WFP Damaturu SubOffice in carrying out any other programmatic activities, as requested by the supervisor.
