Terms of Reference for an Internship with the Division of External Relations, Global Communications Service, Public Outreach and Campaigns Section

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering an internship position within the Public Outreach and Campaigns Section in our Geneva, Switzerland.

Organisational context

UNHCR¿s Visitor¿s Centre
UNHCR¿s Visitors' Centre receives thousands of people every year (individual visitors and groups). The majority of the visiting groups are study groups of diverse levels (e.g. government delegations, diplomats, academics, university students, secondary school students, military officers, NGOs, private sector, etc.). They come to UNHCR from all over the world in order to learn more about the UNHCR mandate, role, structure, operations and diverse activities. The Visitors¿ Centre organizes presentations or lectures for groups by appointment.

Key responsibilities when working here will include
¿ Assist with the preparation of group-specific programmes.
¿ Prepare appropriate briefing material for participants, if required.
¿ Take care of the reception of individual visitors coming to the Visitors' Centre and being mindful of the image conveyed.
¿ Respond to queries linked to current events concerning UNHCR and provide guidance as far as allowed in the scope of the internship.
¿ Upon request, provide support at external public awareness events as well as at certain internal events and conferences.
¿ When necessary, update public information leaflets (mainly English and French) or assist in producing new publications for the Visitors¿ Centre.

UNHCR Campaigns and Events
The Public Outreach and Campaigns Section also manages UNHCR¿s flagship events including; the Nansen Refugee Award, the With Refugees movement, the #IBelong Campaign to End Statelessness and World Refugee Day. The overall aim is to encourage further financial support, greater awareness and empathy for forcibly displaced people. Interns are thoroughly embedded in the team and tasked to deliver concrete elements of one of our key projects.
Key responsibilities when working here will include
¿ Assist with the in-depth research and eligibility determination of Nansen Refugee Award nominations, create candidate profiles and help with the call for nominations.
¿ Help to keep campaign web pages and communications material download pages up-to-date and help produce communications toolkits for UNHCR staff.
¿ Help produce promotional content for events and campaigns, postcards, roll up, short videos, slide shows.
¿ Help manage translation of core communications materials.
¿ Be a focal point for archiving key content.
¿ Assist with campaign impact analysis

The position
UNHCR is looking for individuals with a wide range of skills and great interest in the work of the organization to support our work. The Public Outreach and Campaigns team is specifically searching for intern support for its campaigns and its Visitor¿s Center. Since intern roles in either area have similar competencies and skill requirements, we are looking for intern candidates with the flexibility to work across these functions depending on need.

Essential minimum qualifications and professional experience required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

¿ Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
¿ Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
¿ Please note that candidates who have immediate relatives (father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister) working as staff members of UNHCR are not eligible.

Other qualifications
¿ The candidate must be interested in communication, advocacy or external relations work.
¿ Knowledge of Photoshop, WordPress software, editing tools or an interest in learning them is an advantage

Location
The successful candidate will be based with the team in the Geneva, Switzerland.

Conditions
The internship is for six months and the start date is 2nd of August 2019. It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week).
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, and local transportation
