The United Nations Information and Communications Technology Facility in Valencia, Spain (UNICTF) represents a major breakthrough in the evolution of Information and Communications, Technology, support to UN field missions. It is a pillar of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) support for worldwide peace operations.  As part of the Department of Operations Support (DOS), it serves as the nucleus of mission ICT operations and service management.  It forms an essential bridge to locations around the world.

Functional Responsibilities

Under the technical coordination of the Clinic of the Global Service Centre in Brindisi, the Clinic Nurse will provide nursing services to UNICTF-V that include sound management and smooth functioning of the Clinic. The Clinic Nurse provides primary health care to eligible UN employees and dependents of the United Nations System.

Under the overall supervision of UNOPS Senior Programme Manager, the incumbent will administratively report to UNOPS IT Project and Operations Manager in Valencia. The incumbent will operationally report to the Chief, Administration and Programme Management Unit or his/her designate in Valencia, Spain.

The overall purpose of having a qualified and experienced Clinic Nurse is to ensure efficient and effective Medical support to maintain adequate emergency response to UNICTF-V personnel.

Within delegated authority, the Clinic Nurse at this level will be responsible for the following duties:


Clinical duties

  • Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; documents findings; provides care/advice where indicated; facilitates referral to health care providers as appropriate.
  • Performs diagnostic and screening tests, including ECG's, laboratory tests (blood and urine), or other tests as required.
  • Responds to emergency calls and provides emergency care.
  • Ensures travel health preparedness for staff duty travel, including providing general advice, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments, and the selection and administration of vaccines.
  • Follows up post-travel health issues
  • Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs, including work environment assessment, office ergonomics, and other programs as indicated.
  • Assists with other occupational health issues as required.
  • Performs medical briefing for incoming staff and conduct first aid training
  • Maintains records of patients' medical data including consultations and treatment
  • Maintains strict confidentiality with regards to patient’s medical records; patient management and treatment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Medico-administrative duties:

  • Ensures that medical supplies, medications, instruments and equipment in the UNICTF Clinic are maintained in good order.
  • Ensures that medical instruments are properly sterilized and maintains hygiene and cleanliness of the clinic.
  • Evaluates, orders and maintains an efficient inventory and stock control of medications/vaccines and other medical supplies and equipment.
  • Enters medical data of patients into register, patient's file, and electronic databases.
  • Ensures a proper and safe disposal of hazardous material and medical waste.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Quality nursing services that contribute to the good physical and mental health of staff are provided. Impact of work can can affect health of UNICTF-V personnel. Consequence of error affect human body physically and/or mentally and sometimes may be fatal.

The result of work of the Clinic Nurse impacts directly on delivery of services that satisfy the requirements of the Department as well as the performance of the services implemented in the UN Global Service Center (UNGSC). It will also ensure proper processes and methodologies are followed and implemented according to the United Nations medical standards, policies and guidelines

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education 
Required:
  • Baccalaureate Nursing Programme or an accredited Diploma Programme 
  • Must be a Registered Professional Nurse with a valid license. 
Desirable:
  • Formal certificate in ECG, CPR or Basic Life Support and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care is an asset.
Experience 

Required:

  • A minimum of two years of progressive clinical experience post nursing qualifications in the medical field and/or hospital
  • Experience in occupational health, travel health or public health settings
  • Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing.
  • Formal training in CPR and, preferably, in BCLS and ACLS or equivalent emergency medical care.
  • Knowledge of modern medical information technology and solid computer skill.

Language requirements 

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN. For this job opening, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required;
  • Fluency in Spanish is desirable
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable
