Organizational Setting

One of the main functions assigned to the IAEA by its Statute is to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information and the dissemination of knowledge in the nuclear field among Member States. To facilitate the effective exchange and dissemination of information relevant to the IAEA's work and mandate, the Division of Conference and Document Services coordinates and supports the implementation of these activities for its users and clients, both internal and external, by organizing meetings and conferences, issuing documents in the six official IAEA languages, i.e. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and editing, printing and distributing publications. The Language Services Support Section coordinates the work of the six Translation Sections in the Division. It is responsible for processing incoming translation requests and transmitting them to the Translation Sections, for liaising with customers regarding all translation requests and with the Publishing Section for translations that are published or printed, and for providing terminology and reference support to the translators.

 

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Director, the Section Head ensures the efficient coordination of linguistic services provided to IAEA programme areas.

 

Role

The Section Head is\: (1) a manager, providing guidance and managerial support to the team, and making decisions regarding the efficient use of resources; (2) a coordinator, liaising among the production areas and between the production areas and customers.

 

Functions / Key Results Expected

Plan, organize, direct and evaluate the Section's work, continuously reviewing effectiveness and priorities.

Lead, manage and supervise an innovative and effective team of staff, ensuring an effective balance of skills and resources.

Plan, organize, direct and evaluate the Section’s work, including the processing of incoming translation requests, the editing of English documents and the performance of quality control, continuously reviewing effectiveness and priorities.

Manage and ensure the efficient coordination of language services provided by both internal and external translators, including the preparation of contracts for external translators, and the provision and maintenance of computer-assisted translation tools.

Oversee the development of IAEAterm (the IAEA's multilingual terminology and reference database), and ensure that terms are continually entered and validated in all relevant languages .

Recommend and implement improvements to the workflow of language services in order to improve efficiency and consistency of translations.

Monitor translation output and translator productivity statistics for the six Translation Sections and statistics for the work of the Language Services Support Section, prepare monthly translation cost reports and any other ad hoc statistical reports as required.

Maintain and update workflow management tools in order to enable the most efficient workflow.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

Master's Degree - Advanced university degree in languages or in a relevant subject ( e.g. science, technology, business management or law ).

A minimum of seven years of relevant professional experience; of which a minimum of four years of experience in an international organization, public sector or non-profit organization, or equivalent.
Excellent command of English is essential, with experience of working predominantly in English.
Excellent knowledge of at least one other IAEA language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish).
Ability to effectively and efficiently assign, monitor and manage human, information and knowledge resources.
Ability to create a culture of accountability for performance ensuring consistency, fairness and transparency of performance reviews.
Experience using and/or designing workflow management tools is an asset.
Familiarity with computer-assisted translation and terminology software, in particular SDL products, is an asset.


 

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $72637 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 30144, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
