Background

UNDP in Mozambique is in process of reorganizing itself to meet the demands of this fast-paced environment. Several assessments are unanimous in identifying better communication of UNDP’s programmes and results as an area which needs to be addressed. To respond to this challenge, the CO resource mobilization strategy indicates that the communications function is crucial to ensure that results are reported and communicated effectively to all stakeholders. In this regard, UNDP Mozambique seeks to recruit a Project Communication Officer to work within the framework of the Governance and Social Cohesion portfolio.

Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the UNDP Governance and Social Cohesion Programme Specialist, the Project Communications Officer will support the formulation and implementation of the communication and advocacy strategies of Programme areas related to Governance and Social Cohesion portfolio to increase the standing and awareness of UNDP partners, the Media and the public. The communications officer promotes a client-oriented approach in UNDP.

The Project Communication officer works in close collaboration with the CO Communication Analyst, Programme, Operations and other UNDP teams towards effective achievement of results, anticipating and contributing to resolving complex programme/project related issues and information delivery.   

Duties and Responsibilities

The key functions of the Project Communications Officer include the following:

  • Support the formulation and implementation of communications strategy and advocacy strategies of the programme/projects pertaining the Governance and Social Cohesion portfolio;
  • Increase awareness of UNDP’s mandate and goals namely in relation to Governance and Social Cohesion programmes/projects through dissemination of information, organization of public and media events;
  • Organize publicity, advocacy, knowledge-sharing events and promotional opportunities of programmes/projects as pertinent to the relevant portfolio;
  • Support to programme/project personnel as pertinent to Governance and Social Cohesion in identification, documenting and drafting of success stories, best practices and lessons learned;
  • Organization of training for the programme/project personnel as pertinent to Governance and Social Cohesion on effective communications and advocacy;
  • Identify results and success stories of current projects to be disseminated (through UNDP website, events, communication materials, technical meetings);
  • Prepare and disseminates communication materials around the main programmatic areas to illustrate success stories among development partners, implementing partners, media and forums;
  • Ensure compliance of communication campaign and activities within donor requirements;
  • Strengthen relationship with media to increase visibility of UNDP’s interventions through organization of meetings and preparation and sharing of press releases;
  • In coordination with the CO Communication Analyst, contribute to the digital activities (update UNDP website and social media channels) to promote results, achievements and the progress of programs/projects as pertinent to Governance and Social Cohesion;
  • Perform any other duties connected directly with communication implementation of the Projects as required;
  • Respond positively to new approaches;
  • Responds to client needs promptly.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University degree (or equivalent) in communications, Media, journalism or related field

Experience: 

  • Over 7 years of relevant professional experience at national level in providing communication services to promote the activities of State institutions / international organizations / CSO or business sector
  • Proved experience in dealing with different audiences for achieving results
  • Demonstrated strengths in research, writing, editing and social media experience
  • Knowledge on the use of computers and office software packages
  • Experience in handling web-based management systems

Language requirements: 

  • Fluency in Portuguese (written and spoken)
  • English will be an asset
