Job Description
BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work today in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home. IRC has been present in Nigeria since 2012 when the organization responded to flooding in Kogi state. In early 2014, IRC opened a field office in Mubi town of Adamawa state in NE Nigeria followed by offices in Yola (Adamawa state) in November 2014 and Maiduguri (Borno state) in October 2015 and we are also beginning implementation in Yobe. The IRC and IRC workers must adhere to the values and principles outlined in IRC Way - Standards for Professional Conduct. These are Integrity, Service, and Accountability. In accordance with these values, the IRC operates and enforces policies on Beneficiary Protection from Exploitation and Abuse, Child Safeguarding, Anti Workplace Harassment, Fiscal Integrity, and Anti-Retaliation. SCOPE OF WORK: The IRC is implementing a protection program featuring Empowering and strengthening of community based protection structures, Access to Justice and Rule of Law, Training and capacity building, protection monitoring and referral services, Community out Reach Activities and Information Sharing, and Protection Mainstreaming. The protection program is currently implemented in the North East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. Under the supervision of the Protection Officer, the Protection Assistant will work extensively with other sectors, to ensure that protection principles are being incorporated into the Nigeria sector programs, and in particular with the Women’s Protection and Empowerment Manager, the Child Youth and Protection Development Manager and other IRC Sectors to strengthen the integrated nature of IRC’s protection and assistance programs in Nigeria. The Protection Assistant will conduct protection monitoring in target areas and will conduct case intake for individual protection cases. The Protection Assistant will support the Protection Officer in ensuring the smooth formation and running of community based protection structures and mechanisms.
