Organizational Setting
The Office for Corporate Communication (OCC) is responsible for all corporate and internal communication activities of the Organization. It ensures coherence and consistency in FAO’s corporate messaging and communications’ outputs, as well as enables cost-effectiveness in use of communication-related resources across the Organization.
FAO Consultant/PSA and Call purpose
The purpose of this call is to attract talent with experience and background in the area of publishing/publications to populate Consultant/PSA rosters.
Candidates who have already applied for IRC 4981 need not to re-apply for this vacancy.
Reporting Lines
The Consultants/PSAs will report directly to Officers within the unit they are selected to work in. If outside of OCC the Consultant/PSA will work under the functional supervision of OCC.
Tasks and responsibilities
  • Develop the official language (either Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) versions of FAO publications (handbooks, information booklets, brochures, position papers,fact sheets, other products), ensuring quality and consistency;
  • Support FAO publication production, liaising with technical divisions;
  • Where needed, act as a focal point with FAO divisions and field offices, facilitating cooperation and decision-making among different divisions;
  • Write, edit and proofread FAO publications content and make sure they are written accurately, concisely and correctly (grammar), and comply with FAO standards (terminology and house style);
  • Draft original non-technical texts for media purposes and for the general public (especially youth);
  • Advise on product development and impact evaluation of FAO’s publications;
  • Identify technical publications for possible publication in other formats to be more attractive to a wider general audience;
  • Provide editorial experience to ensure that publications are relevant and interesting to a target audience;
  • Follow the publications workflow in terms of quality and accuracy;
  • Cooperate with editors and graphic designers (internal and external to FAO);
  • Review publication texts to ensure uniformity of style and terminology with FAO policy;
  • Ensure that publications are developed according to corporate policy on internal and external communications;
  • Review and approve proposed publications in the Publishing Workflow System (PWS);
  • Develop recommendations to improve Departmental/divisional publications planning and procedures, in line with corporate policies, with a view to promoting more effective and efficient work processes and solutions;
  • Contribute to Departmental/divisional publishing and communications plans;
  • Liaise with corporate services, external consultants and technical officers on editorial matters, provide inputs on photo selection (suitability, sensitivity, gender, etc.) and sequencing;
  • Support, advise and collaborate closely with the communications officers of technical departments/divisions.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
 According to function (consultant or PSA) either Advanced University Degree or University degree in communication, journalism, political science or related subject;
  • 1 year (Category C consultant/PSA) or 5 years (Category B consultant/PSA) of relevant editing and writing experience in corporate communication, public information, journalism, international relations and media relations;
 For consultants, working knowledge (Level C) of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge (Level B) of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, or Russian.
 For PSAs, working knowledge (Level C) of one of FAO’s official languages. Level B of another official language is desirable.

Technical/Functional Skills
  • Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian writing and editing experience on UN flagship publications.
  • Expertise in food security, nutrition, migration, climate change, and gender.
  • Work experience in UN agencies, major international organizations would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in using computerized publishing workflow systems for evaluation and planning purposes.
  • Experience in using standard publishing software packages
