Job Description

BACKGROUND

Over the past 80 years, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has developed unparalleled expertise in responding to emergencies and helping uprooted communities to rebuild. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster.

The International Rescue Committee Europe is part of the IRC global network, which has its headquarters in New York and London. The IRC is on the ground in more than 40 countries, providing emergency relief, relocating refugees and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster. Through over 20 regional offices in cities across the United States, the IRC also helps refugees resettle in the US and become self-sufficient.

The IRC is committed to a culture of bold leadership, innovation in all aspects of our work, creative partnerships and, most crucially, accountability to those we serve. The IRC is a tireless advocate for the most vulnerable.

IRC Europe

Europe is one of the fastest growing regions for the IRC and currently consists of offices in the UK, Greece, Italy, Serbia, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany. In addition, the IRC has a partnership with Stichting Vluchteling (SV) in the Netherlands. The work across our external facing offices in Berlin, Brussels, London and Bonn, is led and coordinated by a Europe SMT.

IRC-UK was established in London in 1997 to support the organisation’s global activities and particularly to diversify its donor base and be able to better advocate with European policy-makers on behalf of the people we serve. Since its establishment IRC-UK has grown rapidly and is now acknowledged for its high quality project management, technical expertise in governance and rights and economic recovery, and innovative thinking on early recovery and gender based violence. IRC-UK comprises approximately 120 staff.

IRC-DE has grown rapidly since its inception in 2015, a direction that is expected to continue. As well as running domestic programmes and investing to raise new funds from German donors, the office is now also responsible for holding IRC’s relationship with ECHO. IRC-DE comprises approx. 40 staff across 2 offices in Berlin and Bonn.

Smaller offices exist in Brussels and Geneva, focused on advocacy with European institutions and technical support to programmes. An office is also due to be opened shortly in Sweden, focused on investing in private fundraising and holding IRC’s relationship with SIDA.

In addition to the management line to the Senior Director of Finance Europe, the role also has a technical reporting line into the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis in NY Finance.
