Background

UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/Project Background:

Under the Ending Violence against Women Programme (EVAW), UN Women started the -Combating Gender Based Violence in Bangladesh (CGBV) – Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada. This initiative intends to create a holistic framework of integrated and mutually reinforcing interventions to address the underlying causes of violence against women and girls, improve their access to educational and economic opportunities, and promote their equal status in society. CGBV will enhance the capacity of civil society to design, implement and sustain primary prevention of gendered violence, while also strengthening government mechanisms and strategies identified under Bangladesh’s 7th Five Year Plan and the National Women Development Policy. The project will generate evidence to build knowledge on prevention strategies. The CGVB will engage and capacitate local stakeholders and high-level leadership of key institutions such as local government, civil society organizations, women’s organizations, education institutions and workplaces.

The project also builds on the knowledge, lessons learnt, experience and partnerships that UN Women in Bangladesh has gained by supporting small scale violence prevention projects since 2011. As part of the UN Trust Fund, a project titled, Safe School and Safe Community (SSSC) was implemented in 80 Higher Secondary schools of 4 districts on sexual harassment prevention from 2014-16. SSSC built the capacity of the schools to comply with the High Court Directive to prevent sexual harassment. UN Women is also working, since 2014, with 4 universities to prevent sexual harassment through student campaigns, building institutional capacities of universities & the University Grants Commission and advocacy, through its Building Capacity to Prevent Violence Against Women (BCPVAW) project.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision and guidance of the EVAW Programme Specialist, the selected intern is expected to support the EVAW Team with the following tasks:

  • Support the knowledge management component of the EVAW Programm, contributing to the review of background documents, briefs and presentations related to the Ending Violence against Women;
  • Compile information from different sources and produce analytical synopses on EVAW and Child Marriage;
  • Provide technical inputs to research and technical reports on EVAW and Child Marriage;
  • Coordinate and support the organization of events and other workshops and taking minutes;
  • Prepare briefing notes, talking points, and reports as required;
  • Participate and support in the implementation of activities and events including high level inter-governmental meetings, forums, as needed, to support proper documentation and provide technical support;
  •  Undertake administrative tasks necessary for the implementation of the programme, including maintaining of files and records, online folder update, process of payment;
  • Support, as needed, the development of publications, advocacy and communication materials;
  • Contribute to data entry and database updating/revision;
  • Provide support on additional tasks and projects related to programme as required.
  • Support the procurement and other administrative processes.

  • The intern will be provided with hands-on learning opportunities to work in the area of EVAW and overall gender equality and women’s empowerment;
  • The selected intern will have an exposure to UN Women system and get opportunity to update on the corporate policy documents prepared by the Country Office, regional and headquarters offices;
  • The Intern will be provided with networking opportunity with various programme colleagues and participate in the workshop / seminars for broader learning purpose.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Degree in gender studies, human rights, laws, international relations or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct. advantage

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment

UN Women Internship Policy:

1.) Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);(b)   Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);(c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

2.) UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

3.) All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

4.) UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

5.) The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

6.) Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to positions in the professional and above category in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;

7.) The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application
