Objectives of the programme

The Food and Nutrition experts provide specialist advice to the Family and Reproductive Health Cluster to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate policies, strategies and plans, including food safety, to address nutrition problems and improve the nutritional status of the population, especially that of vulnerable groups, to achieve optimal nutrition in the context of the WHO comprehensive implementation plan (CIP) on maternal, infant and young child nutrition, the Global Strategy on Women's, Children's and Adolescent Health 2020 and global targets of the Maternal, Infant and young child nutrition agenda 2025.

Areas of expertise

(Note\: This is a generic description of areas of expertise developed for a roster of consultants/experts. The final terms of the reference for the assignment/contract will be based on the actual requirements of the assignment.)

The Food and Nutrition Consultants’ area of expertise being sought include

·Assessment/evaluation of national food control systems or components thereof and supporting institutional analysis and reform

·Policy design, implementation planning, monitoring and evaluation of Food safety policy, strategy or plan

·Food legislation and standards review and drafting

·Foodborne disease surveillance and food analytical capacity strengthening

  • Food safety Emergency preparedness and response

·Food safety and food control training materials and curricula development and adaptation

·Prevention and management of undernutrition, micronutrient malnutrition, obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases throughout the lifecycle

·Policy design, implementation planning, monitoring and evaluation of Nutrition policy, strategy or plan

·Nutrition regulatory policies, systems and initiatives

  • Nutrition Research (operational and applied research in clinical or public health nutrition
  • Data curation and nutrition surveillance
  • Nutrition in Emergencies

·Curriculum development for training, adaptation of training materials and specialization in clinical or public health nutrition

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\:

Experts (P4-P5)\: Masters’ level university degree in Nutrition, Foodscience, food technology, microbiology, food safety, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Nutritional Epidemiology, Nutrition Sciences, Paediatrics or equivalent discipline.

Specialists (P2 - P3)\: First University Degree in the relevant field

Desirable\:Any additional education or training in the relevant field would be an asset.

Experience

Essential\:

Experts\: At least 7-10 years’ experience in the food and nutrition field.

Specialists\: At least 5 years’ experience in the food and nutrition field.


Desirable\:Any additional experience related to the field would be an asset in undertaking the duties

Languages\:

Essential\:Expert knowledge of English or French
Desirable\:Knowledge of Portuguese would be an asset

Other Skills\:

Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications and computer skills including the ability to make high quality technical presentations and data analysis.

Additional information

The purpose of this VN is to invite qualified professionals with relevant expertise for P2/P3/P4/P5 grades for inclusion in a roster of experts for possible short-term assignments which may arise from time to time at the WHO Regional Office for Africa.

The grade of the position will be fixed based on the level of responsibilities and complexity of tasks assigned as reflected in the terms of reference.
