BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest provider of humanitarian food assistance. On average, WFP reaches more than 80 million people with food assistance in 82 countries each year. Around 14,000 people work for the organization, most of them in remote areas, directly serving the hungry poor.

ShareTheMeal is developed as the first pilot project of the WFP Innovation Accelerator, part of the Innovation and Change Management Division, which aims to combine start-up lean thinking with non-profit projects to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. This division reports to the Chief of Staff of WFP and seeks to create value through prioritizing and better harnessing innovative ideas, as well as scaling up transformative projects to a global level.

The ShareTheMeal app was launched in 2015 and currently has more than one million users. The team, located in Berlin, is focused on growing the user base and increasing engagement of existing users through marketing and communication initiatives as well as further developing the app to include new and innovative features.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consultant, reporting to the Head of the ShareTheMeal initiative, is expected to:

  1. Lead, with the Head of Product and Tech and the Product Manager, the development of a state-of-the-art UX and UI
    1. Gather and validate business and end-user requirements
    2. Design user journeys based on the needs and the limitations of the users and of the context of use
    3. Develop wireframes, prototypes, storyboards, user flows, animations and mockups of new/optimized features
    4. Prepare and iterate visual assets and pixel-perfect layout specifications for the native mobile apps, working hand in hand with our Android and iOS developers and QA
    5. Ensure that usability principles and UX best practices are followed and define specifications for user interface behaviours
    6. Test the designs with end users at different stages of the product development cycle and refine the interface based on the findings to minimize fixes and rework during development
    7. Provide Quality Assurance on the correct implementation of interface designs and behaviour
  2. Manage ShareTheMeal's graphic design resources on a day-to-day basis
    1. Coordinate graphic design tasks across UX/UI, marketing assets and video
    2. Mentor and guide the Junior Graphic designer, the Video Editor and volunteer supporters
  3. Continue to develop a strong visual identity for ShareTheMeal
    1. Refine the brand identity
    2. Ensure a coherent visual identity across different channels
  4. Maintain strong coordination with the Communications, Advocacy and Marketing Division (CAM) and the Information Technology Division (TEC) on issues related to WFP’s visual branding, Human-Centred Design, User Interface Guidelines, and other design & technology standards
  5. Support other activities as required

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

  1. Ongoing development of UX/UI elements (e.g. donation picker, onboarding, interactive map, leaderboard, donor impact)
  2. Cohesive visual identity in place across all channels

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education: Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree is preferred

Experience: At least 3 years of progressively responsible national or international experience in a UI/UX position. Experience in both fields is essential.

Knowledge & Skills: 

  • 3+ years of relevant experience researching, conceiving and designing worldclass mobile UX and native Android and iOS UI; additional experience in responsive webdesign is a plus
  • Strong sense of visual design, deep knowledge of usability principles and relentless creative attitude that aspires to perfect usercentered design
  • Deep knowledge of your tools – Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Zeplin, UX prototyping tool such as InVision
  • Bold, energetic, self-driven team player, with a passion for social issues
  • Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the World Food Programme

Languages: In addition to a high proficiency in written and spoken English, knowledge of a second UN language is a plus. High proficiency in German is a plus.
