OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Strategic communication with the public, media, Member States, donors and other partners is integral to our goal of making the Western Pacific the healthiest and safest region in the world.

 

Rapid development in many parts of the Region and widespread adoption of digital technologies has profoundly changed the way in which people consume information, and it shapes their beliefs, behaviours and health. This is both a challenge and an opportunity.

 

WHO must listen and use its voice to share the evidence-based information on channels and in formats that our stakeholders want and need, so that countries implement better health policies and people protect their own health.

 

The objectives of the Communications unit (COM) in the Office of Regional Director are\:

 

- to increase awareness of key health issues in the Region and encourage appropriate behaviour changes to address them;

- to advocate for evidence-based policies and build constituencies and partnerships around key public health challenges in the Region; and

- to enhance visibility of and support for WHO's work, including through stories of its impact on people's lives.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1. Working with others in the COM team and regional communications network, develops, implements and continuously refines editorial and digital engagement strategy for the Region;

 

2. Ensures active communications support from the RO to COs and GDSOs;

 

3. Coordinates across 3 levels of the organization and with key partners on editorial issues, media relations and digital engagement;

 

4. Executes regional media engagement, monitoring and measurement;

 

5. Oversees planning and production (in-house and with external suppliers), approvals and dissemination of communications products;

 

6. Contributes to communications capacity building for WHO staff in the Region; and

 

7. Performs other tasks within this area of work as requested by the supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: Any advanced university degree (Master's level or above) from a recognized university. At least one degree (Bachelor's or Master's) must be in communications, journalism, English, international relations, political science, social science, humanities, public health or other related field.


Desirable\: Other qualifications in communications, public health or other field relevant to the position.

Experience

Essential\: A minimum of seven years of professional experience at national and international level in the area of communications, public relations, or journalism.


Desirable\: Experience within WHO or other international organization with a focus on public health.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 72,637 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2627 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
