OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To provide quality assurance of scientific, technical and advocacy information related to health; to establish mechanisms to screen and process publications in line with WHO policies; to establish styles, standards, norms and guidelines for the preparation and production of health information materials; to train WHO regional and country office staff about Style Guide and writing for WHO, and to advise SEAR professional staff and Member States on the production of high quality information materials.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Programme Management, the incumbent will\:

1.  Elaborate and monitor the workplan of the Reports and Documents Unit;

2.  Assume primary responsibility to edit, revise, rewrite and otherwise review a variety of reports, books, publications and other materials, and SEAR Governing Body documentation, in print or electronic format, which may be complex and highly technical in nature, or for advocacy/fund raising purposes;

3.  Organize in-house and contractual editing and processing of reports, books, publications and other documents for their design, layout and presentation;

4.  Advise South-East Asia Region (SEAR) officials on publishing policies, principles and procedures related to the preparation of documents;

5.  Manage the Reports and Documents Unit team as first and second-level supervisor as the case maybe, including the work of the Editorial Services, Text Processing and Designing units;

6.  Train staff of the regional office and country offices periodically on WHO Style Guide and writing for WHO to improve quality and reduce publication errors upstream in coordination with Editor;

7.  Act as Secretary to the Publishing Policy and Procedures Committee; 

8.  Assure the editorial quality of all documentation for the Regional Committee and other high-level meetings (including the High-level Preparatory Meeting for the Regional Committee and the Regional Committee); coordinating, editing and collating the work of the report writers and editorial assistants at sessions of high-level meetings; editing Regional Committee resolutions; and editing the final reports of the Regional Committee and other high-level meetings.

9. Any other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: An advanced university degree in English literature, journalism, publishing or a closely related subject.

Desirable\: A master's degree in public health or biomedical sciences.

Experience

Essential\: At least seven years of experience in editing and reviewing texts, some of which should have been obtained in an international context.

Desirable\: Experience in an international organization, preferably WHO, and/or of working in a developing country, and experience in editing and production of peer-reviewed health journals.

Skills

Excellent linguistic skills (writing, editing, proofreading) in English; knowledge of publishing practices and computer applications related to document processing.

Other skills (eg. IT)\: Proficient in MS Office Software applications, data analysis and technical presentations.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 72,637 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1828 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
