OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The objective of the Translation, Interpretation and Printing (TIP) Unit is to process and organize scientific, technical, medical, biomedical and health-related information and disseminate them to Member States, United Nations Agencies, international organizations, researchers, staff members, etc. in all three languages of the African Region (English, French and Portuguese).

PURPOSE OF THE POST
Provide editorial assistance to assigned Translator (Portuguese). The incumbent will ensure the smooth flow of work as related to translation and editing activities and coordinate with the other editorial assistants and staff of the Translation, Interpretation and Printing (TIP) Unit.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The incumbent works on the basis of general instructions, own experience and precedents, following TIP-specific procedures and practices, rules and regulations, to ensure smooth work flow in the Unit/Cluster. The incumbent is encouraged to seek guidance for unusual issues. Most of the work is controlled for correctness and appropriateness by the incumbent. Work is reviewed by the Translator for accuracy and quality.
(a) Assist the Portuguese Editor in the production of regional publications; at the request of the supervisor, follow up with applicant technical or support units to request or obtain information, missing parts of documents, etc. to complete job requests submitted for processing or in progress; monitor and record the movement of jobs within subunits of TIP until processing moves to the next subunit;
(b) Type, re-type, correct or re-correct from electronic, audio or video media translated, revised or edited documents, reports, texts, materials, etc. in Portuguese for meetings organized in implementation of the Regional Programme, including meetings of constitutional organs;
(c) Perform simple layout, text formatting and cover design for minor documents using appropriate software (InDesign, Photoshop, Publisher, etc.);
(d) Check material for correctness, accuracy and completeness.
(e) Check and confirm references for Editor.
(f); Generate, check and correct tables of content, indexes, annexes, footnotes, lists of participants, etc.
(g); Help other colleagues in the Unit proofread material before submission; train new secretaries or persons on internship in the subunit; guide persons assigned to the Unit during peak seasons, the Regional Committee or similar meetings.
(h); Perform other related tasks as required or instructed by senior technical staff or the TIP Manager, including providing support to other areas of work.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential\: Completion of secondary school education or equivalent technical or commercial education.
Desirable\: Training in editorial practices or in an administrative field in Portuguese is desirable.
Experience
Essential\: Five to seven years’ experience of secretarial or editorial functions in Portuguese language.
Desirable\: Experience in a similar support position in WHO or another UN agency is an asset. Experience in Oracle-based or other ERP systems an asset.

Skills
Excellent knowledge of major word processing and database management software. Excellent knowledge of Portuguese and WHO editorial rules for Portuguese. The incumbent maintains and updates proficiency in the use of modern office technology through in-house courses and online or self-training. He/she keeps abreast of changes in editorial procedures and practices, rules and regulations, organizational structure, in the unit, cluster and WHO, to be able to brief others and explain procedures.
Work requires the use of word processing or other software packages, and standard office equipment to create, edit, format and print correspondence and documents; spreadsheet and visual presentation software; e-mail and scheduling software to improve communications both internally and externally.

Use of Language Skills
Essential\: Excellent knowledge of Portuguese and intermediate knowledge of French and English in all elements\: reading, writing and speaking 

REMUNERATION
WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at XAF 1,006,300 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
