Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you a motivated accelerator physicist working in the field of injection and extraction? Do you relish a challenge? If so, join CERN’s Accelerator Beam Transfer Group and bring your expertise to the field of beam transfer systems in the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. CERN, take part!

You will join the Beam Transfer Physics Section (TE-ABT-BTP), responsible for conceptual design studies of beam transfer systems for new and proposed accelerators and for the commissioning, machine studies and operational follow-up of existing systems.

You can find more information about TE department: www.cern.ch/te-dep/

Functions

You will:

  • Design layouts and optics for injection, extraction and transfer lines systems and simulate the underlying accelerator physics processes.
  • Specify equipment system parameters like magnet field strength, homogeneity and aperture, power supply stability and beam instrumentation functionality.
  • Commission systems with beams, improve their operational performance and evaluate effects in the case of non-conformities.
  • Schedule, plan and coordinate beam transfer work packages from design to beam commissioning.
  • Supervise students and post-doctoral Fellows.

Experience:

The experience required for this job is:

  • Demonstrated experience in accelerator modelling codes and optics design.
  • Demonstrated experience in accelerator commissioning, development and performance analysis.
  • Initial experience in design of injection, extraction and transfer line systems.
  • Initial experience in coordination of small projects from design to implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience in writing technical specifications and publishing scientific results.
