Our team and mission

The Optics Section, as part of the Mechatronics and Optics Division, provides optical engineering support to ESA projects and carries out technological research in the areas of optical component technology, optical instrumentation (spectro-radiometric imaging instruments in the visible and infrared, interferometry, optical aperture synthesis) and testing (calibration and performance verification).

Field(s) of activities

The Young Graduate Trainee (YGT) will get acquainted with the principles of optical verification and characterisation tests applicable to optical space instrumentation. The YGT will support specific tests for optical components, such as scatter, transmission/reflection and wavefront error measurements. The YGT will be involved in the preparation, execution and analysis of these measurements.

In addition, the YGT will support the set-up and operation of optical ground test equipment for the verification and characterisation of small space instruments in the optical laboratory and will verify the correct operation of the equipment by designing and performing appropriate characterisation tests.

Finally, the YGT will have the opportunity to review the design of novel instruments and perform performance analysis activities using optical software tools.

Applicants should have just completed, or be in their final year of a University course at Masters Level (or equivalent) in physics or optical engineering.

Additional requirements

Applicants must be fluent in English and/or French, the working languages of the Agency. A good proficiency in English is required.

In addition to the above competencies, applicants should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.

During the interview the candidates' motivation and overall professional perspective/career goals will also be explored.
