Under the supervision of the Network Operations Officer, the incumbent of this position will assist with the administration, maintenance, documentation, and monitoring of networks and network components in NYHQ. He or she will work to proactively identify and resolve risks and emerging faults in order to increase network capacity, security, redundancy and fault tolerance.

Purpose of the Position

Under the supervision of the Network Operations Officer, the incumbent of this position will assist with the administration, maintenance, documentation, and monitoring of networks and network components in NYHQ. He or she will work to proactively identify and resolve risks and emerging faults in order to increase network capacity, security, redundancy and fault tolerance.

Key Accountabilities and Duties & Tasks

  1. Perform audit and forensics of core and critical network components and develop a network baseline benchmark. Optimize and fine tune network performance according to benchmark. Implement and maintain network redundancy plan. Support maintain functionality and availability of Network Services for NYHQ Data Centres, Virtual Environment, Inter-Site Connectivity, Cloud Services, and Wi-Fi Services in NYHQ. Ensure proper deployment and administration of Network Monitoring tools. Assist with administration of NYHQ networks and provide advanced NYHQ user support on issues related to networks and IP Addressing scheme implementation. 
  2. Plan network changes and growth based on network security, utilization data, performance data, and user input. Monitor and analyze network statistics, vendor reports and other sources of information with intent for network optimization. Utilize existing Enterprise Management tool sets, as well as vendor specific utilities. Provide and maintain network documentation.
  3. Increase network availability and service levels by establishing routine maintenance procedures, heightening security and access rights. Coordinate all changes closely with other Technical groups (Security, Telecoms, Applications, NYHQ Help Desk, GHD and Change Management). 
  4. On a continuing basis, maintain UNICEF's Local Network Infrastructure at all NYHQ locations: from hardware installations of network components (including but not limited to; Routers, Switches, Monitoring devices and Servers, etc.) to software upgrades and network management tools. Facilitate the installation and maintenance of LAN cabling as moves and changes occur. Provide 1st & 2nd level support to all problems relating to LAN/WAN infrastructure.

Qualifications of Successful Candidate

  • Secondary education supplemented with university level courses in Computer Science or related field plus some industry-wide vendor certification in a technically relevant field: Networking / Telecommunications.
  • Seven years of practical work experience in: Network Problem Resolution, Infrastructure Operations, Service Operations, knowledge of at least one Enterprise Management Software (Monitoring & Reporting).
  • Fundamental working knowledge of TCP/IP in an Ethernet Local Area Network environment.
  • Knowledge of Wide Area Network and Local Area Network technologies, PC/MS Windows networking concepts, Wi-Fi technologies.
  • Working knowledge of UNICEF systems, policies and procedures is considered an asset.
  • Passing the GGST Exam (Global General Service Test) or UN ASAT in English is required.
  • Non-US candidates must be in possession of a US G4 visa or be a US permanent resident/citizen.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
