Rationale and context of the assignment

The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication, made up of Web, Social Media and Multimedia teams, work together to create compelling public-facing content and provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, DSS draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF's work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability.

Web stories, blog entries, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via UNICEF.org, YouTube, news media and other outlets and platforms – all are a part of our digital storytelling. By measuring and testing our efforts, we also use data to inform content and engagement choices.

The Digital Strategy (DS) section of the Division of Communications at UNICEF is looking to hire a Video Editor/Producer to produce, shoot and edit video and graphics for video productions intended for online and broadcast platforms in support of global communications strategy.

Scope of Work:  

Under the overall direction of the DS/DOC Head of Multimedia, the Video Editor/Producer will accomplish the following objectives:

  • Coordinate with numerous people throughout the organization to personally research, structure, develop, assemble and produce multimedia (text, images, audio, video, interactive, etc.) pieces for breaking news, scheduled events and other content areas related to UNICEF programs and campaigns
  • Develop multimedia packages on a quick turnaround, under tight and variable deadlines for social media and other online and broadcast platforms
  • Shoot and edit video and web material as needed for UNICEF priority communications.
  • Undertake UNICEF video production and post-production, including logging and digitizing source tapes, outputting final cuts to tape and web clips, audio editing and managing media for Adobe Creative Cloud, After FX, Pro Tools and related technologies
  • Maintain branding for UNICEF videos and affiliated media products
  • Edit videos as needed for UNICEF priority communications.
  • Undertake UNICEF video production and post-production, including managing media for Premiere, After FX, Pro Tools and related motion graphics and animation software
  • Work as needed on UNICEF NYHQ premises; all equipment and supplies will be provided
  • Work as required at own facilities utilizing own equipment and graphics editing tools
  • Liaise with the Head of Multimedia to assist other video editors as needed
  • Provide additional support to the Technical Specialist in overseeing all video post-production and equipment service, planning and related support to the Digital Strategy broadcast operation.
  • Work on UNICEF NYHQ premises; all equipment and supplies will be provided
  • Serve as HQ in-house videographer as required
  • Conduct recorded interviews; manage audio files in a variety of formats.
  • Work with video files in multiple formats.
  • Gather information on an on-going basis; gain a thorough understanding of the organization; be extremely well-informed on international current events.
  • May be asked to work on weekends and/or travel
  • UNICEF will provide video, stills, data and key messages that can be used to develop videos.
  • UNICEF will provide consolidated comments on scripts and rough cut
  • UNICEF will provide guidance on graphic work based on institutional branding guidelines

Responsibilities:

POST PPRODUCTION:

  • Motion graphics, animation and video editing
  • Edit video and web material as needed
  • Output final videos for web and broadcast distribution.
  • Sound mix
  • Assist producer in liaising with external production houses and distribution outlets
  • Troubleshoot technical problems
  • May be asked to work on weekends
  • Available for meetings with the DSS team as required to follow up the process developing the storyboard and approving the chosen creative direction as well as the visual design. UNICEF will be responsible for the approval of the final version of video products.      
  • Visual representation of characters, symbols and general graphics in the videos should work across different cultural/geographic contexts as the videos will be used to target audiences from a number of different countries.
  • The videos may be developed in multiple languages
  • The videos will incorporate a closing animation with UNICEF logo.
  • Only professional programmes for animation will be used.
  • The videos should be delivered in a digital format that can be used on YouTube, and other digital media tools (open files) as well as in TV broadcast quality.
  • The videos will pass to the exclusive ownership of UNICEF, including all use and distribution rights connected to them

Supervisor and timeframes for reviewing milestones and performance: Tanya Turkovich, Head of Multimedia DS/DOC. Reviews conducted every 6 months and at the end of contract.

 Performance indicators for evaluation of results:

  • Quality and quantity edited video products assigned
  • Creative contributions to communications challenges
  • Level of organization of media
  • Standard UNICEF Performance Evaluations conducted every 6 months and at end of contract.
  • Timely delivery of deliverables and adherence to timeline and set deadlines.

Qualifications or specialized knowledge/ experience required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional video and audio editing experience
  • Skilled in motion graphics design, animation and video production.
  • Skilled in video shooting, lighting and sound
  • Skilled in the following industry tools: Premiere, After FX, Pro Tools and other professional post-production software.
  • Experience in digitizing and video streaming for the web and other multimedia services
  • Ability to operate the video production and editing equipment
  • Ability to edit materials from a culturally sensitive perspective
  • Willingness to work in a multi-cultural environment in a cooperative and professional manner, including observance of UNICEF product clearance procedures
  • Professional work ethic, integrity, and initiative
  • Knowledge of international development issues a plus
  • Advanced graphic design and typography skills coupled with the ability to weave a meaningful and compelling story
  • Artistic vision with a can-do attitude and the skills to back it up
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, collaborative, and able to create in a fast-paced and growing environment
  • Work effectively with minimal crew in pursuit of creative excellence
  • Exceptional communication skills, tact, and diplomacy
  • Remain current on industry trends and styles, able to integrate new technique and/or technology when appropriate
  • Proficiency in Mac platform, Non-linear editing - Adobe Premier, Audition, Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, 2D/3D motion graphics – After Effects, HTML5, Flash (animation, composition, VFX, title sequencing is a plus)
  • Post-production workflows, appropriate media formats, and optimizing video for various outputs
  • Website or reel showcasing specific skills listed above
