Purpose of the internship:

On 15 March 2016, the Government of Viet Nam requested assistance from international partners in its response to the drought and salt water intrusion, prioritizing interventions for safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene practices as well as nutritional support in drought-affected areas. It also prioritized enhanced monitoring of potential disease outbreaks. On 26 April 2016, the Government of Viet Nam, the United Nations, and partners appealed to the international community to support a US$48.5 million joint Government-United Nations emergency response plan to address the El Niño drought, affecting as many as two million people in central and southern regions. UNICEF led the development of funding proposals on emergency WASH and nutrition under the framework of the joint Government-United Nations Emergency Response Plan ultimately launched in June 2016.

For its part, UNICEF Viet Nam successfully mobilized USD 4 million (of which USD 1.5 million was from the CERF and USD 2.5 million from the Government of Japan), leading to the development and approval of the programme on "Emergency Support in Responding to Drought and Salt Water Intrusion in South Central Coast, Central Highlands and Mekong Delta Region supported by UNICEF". This programme has supported nutrition interventions for 7,480 severe acute malnourished children between six months and five years of age, 83,335 children between six and 23 months, and 123,200 pregnant and lactating women in six provinces (Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Ninh Thuan, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang and Ca Mau). The programme has also provided water and sanitation interventions to 78,000 households in 10 drought-affected provinces (Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Ben Tre, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang and Ca Mau).

The Emergency Team was established in UNICEF to support the operational implementation of the emergency response programme. The team was supported by two Programme Assistants of which one left on maternity leave in mid-February 2017.
