Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Internal and external candidates will be considered for this vacancy. For the purposes of this vacancy, internal candidates are defined as staff members holding a regular, fixed-term or short-term graded or ungraded contract, including Junior Professional Officers (JPOs), staff on Special Leave Without Pay (SLWOP), and staff members on secondment/loan released by the Organization, unless otherwise specified in their contract. Staff members holding a regular, fixed-term or short-term graded contract will not retain their contract type if appointed to an ungraded position.

Context:

The Migration Policy Research Division is responsible for supporting IOM’s worldwide efforts in developing and conducting policy-oriented migration research, as well as implementing its own research projects in order to inform program delivery and policy development. It promotes deeper and more nuanced understandings of international migration within and outside IOM, and is responsible for the preparation of IOM’s flagship publication, the World Migration Report.

More recently, the Research Division has carriage of the policy research component as part of IOM’s lead role in support of the 2018 Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

The research officer will work under the overall guidance and general supervision of the head of the Research Division and work closely with colleagues in the Division. The research officer will have the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Assist in the coordination of the GCM Migration Research Leaders Syndicate, including in relation to the preparation of workshops, the commissioning of papers and the facilitating of input of some of the world’s leading migration researchers.

2. Desk-based research tasks and related research assistance to support the preparation of Page 1 / 3research papers and reports for publication on a range of migration topics, including for the GCM.

3. Prepare regular contributions for the research component of IOM’s GCM website and IOM’s intranet.

4. Assist in the administration of GCM research component, including the preparation of project reporting, written updates to senior management, donor agreements and project reporting. 5. Assist with the preparation and conduct of the migration expert speaker series in HQ. 6. Respond to internal and external GCM-related and other research queries. 7. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

• Master’s degree in Migration Studies or other relevant social sciences (e.g. Humanitarian Affairs, Development Studies, Political Science, International Relations) or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or

• University degree in the above fields with two years of relevant professional experience. Experience

• Strong understanding of migration issues;

• Excellent research, writing, communication and analytical skills, including a record of publishing on aspects of migration in an academic environment;

• Experience in working with senior officials and academics;

• Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written);

• Good level of computer literacy;

• Strong organizational skills;

• Ability to understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios;

• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds, including in high pressure environments;

• Proven ability to produce high quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines;

• Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently. Languages

Fluency in English. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage. Desirable Competencies:
