We are looking for a Forestry Officer for Latvia and Lithuania to help strengthen sustainable forest management and expand FSC certification in the Baltic region. This role is hands-on and field-oriented, working closely with forest managers, companies, government institutions, and NGOs with visible environmental and social impact, working under the direct supervision of the FSC National Representative for Latvia and Lithuania / Regional Forest Management Manager Europe.


Forests in Latvia and Lithuania play a crucial role in biodiversity, climate regulation, and rural livelihoods. In this role, you will help ensure they are managed responsibly for generations to come.

Main Roles & Responsibilities

Grow sustainable forest management
  • Support the National Representative in implementing the forest management strategy for Latvia and Lithuania. 
  • Maintain and develop new opportunities for FSC certification across state, private, and smallholder forests. 
  • Asses and communicate the environmental and market impacts of FSC certification and contribute to regional forest data analysis across the Baltic states.

Work with diverse stakeholders
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with forest owners, certification bodies, industry groups, trade unions, and public authorities. 
  • Represent FSC at meetings, conferences, international forums, regional meetings and sector events. 
  • Help bring FSC tools and knowledge into practice through trainings, webinars, and stakeholder support (including translations and outreach). 

Provide technical support and contribute to standards
  • Advise current and potential certificate holders, as well as certification bodies. 
  • Contribute to the development and revision of FSC standards by ensuring regional perspectives are included.

Your profile

We are looking for someone who combines forestry expertise with a collaborative and practical mindset.

Experience & knowledge
  • At least 5 years of experience in forestry, forest management, certification, or related fields, combined with a university degree in silviculture, forestry, forest and/or supply chain management or an equivalent combination of education/vocational training and work experience.
  • Practical understanding of FSC standards, sustainable forest management practices, forest product value chains and market dynamics, including their impact on the Baltic forest sector and forest managers.
  • Experience working with certification systems or environmental governance is an advantage. 

Skills & working style
  • You enjoy working independently while staying connected to a multi-cultural, multi-lingual and global team. 
  • You are structured, reliable, and able to manage multiple priorities. 
  • You are comfortable engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse audiences, actively listen, and facilitate inclusive and interactive discussions.

Languages
  • Fluency in Latvian, Lithuanian and/or Russian (being fluent in two or all of these languages would be a clear advantage). 
  • Excellent English skills (written and spoken). 

Digital skills
  • Confident user of standard software packages like MS Office.
  • Familiarity with CRM systems (e.g. Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics) is an advantage. 
  • Comfortable learning new digital tools.

The Fine Print

Terms and Conditions
  • Location: Latvia or Lithuania. This appointment is home-based office on those days when not attending meetings or field visits.
  • Working Hours: Full time - 40 hours per week.
  • Contract: Service and License Agreement for Regional Consultants. Duration of Employment: 2 years (extension possible).
  • Starting Date: As soon as possible.
  • Travel: Sporadic national and international travel is required.
