BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity, and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC office in Miami has been serving the community since the 1960s. Over the decades, IRC in Miami has provided critical support to refugees, asylees, survivors of human trafficking, unaccompanied minors, immigrant youth, and their families.  

SCOPE OF COMMUNICATIONS WORK: The Communications Intern will support the development and implementation of strategic communications to increase awareness, engagement, and visibility of the organization’s programs and impact. This role is ideal for a creative, detail-oriented, and proactive individual interested in nonprofit communications, digital storytelling, and audience engagement. 

The intern will assist in creating newsletters and email content, managing and growing social media presence, organizing digital media assets, and supporting broader communications initiatives.   

This position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week for at least three months. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Draft and edit written materials for internal and external communications, including newsletters, email campaigns, program highlights, success stories, website content, flyers, and promotional materials. 

  • Assist in creating, scheduling, and managing email communications and maintaining accurate distribution lists and contact databases. 

  • Create, schedule, and manage engaging content for social media platforms and the website, ensuring consistency with organizational branding and messaging. 

  • Identify strategies to increase social media reach, engagement, and followers, and track analytics to recommend improvements. 

  • Organize and maintain the digital media library, ensuring photos, videos, graphics, and templates are properly labeled, categorized, and accessible. 

  • Assist in collecting and developing content, including photos, testimonials, and stories, to support communications, outreach, and fundraising efforts. 

  • Support communications for events, campaigns, outreach initiatives, and special events as needed. 

  • Assist in creating a communications calendar, trackers, and coordinating communications projects and timelines. 

  • Conduct research on communications trends, tools, and best practices to strengthen outreach and engagement. 

  • Support Safety & Protection Program communications and related needs, including external communications and donation and fundraising support. 

  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities. 

 

REQUIREMENTS:  

  • An interest in helping low-income families and survivors of human trafficking. 

  • Effective communication and writing skills. 

  • Strong attention to detail. 

  • Excellent organizational skills. 

  • Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects. 

  • A strong desire to help people and enthusiasm to work in a multi-cultural setting. 

  • Prior experience in a non-profit setting a plus. 

  • Prior relevant coursework preferred. 

 

The internship will be filled on a rolling basis. We will continue to accept applications until April 10th, 2026, or until the position is filled, whichever occurs first. Internship will begin the week of May 11th, 2026.
