The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is hiring a Principal Enterprise Architect within the Information Technology Services (ITS) department.
This role is based in Basel; however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and their dependent family members.
This job is available as a five-year fixed-term contract.

Purpose of the job
Information Technology Services (ITS) provides the technology that powers the Bank's global operations. From hybrid cloud infrastructure and digital workplace tools to DevOps technologies and data platforms, ITS delivers cutting-edge solutions to meet the Bank's diverse needs.
As the Principal Enterprise Architect, you will lead the Bank’s Enterprise Architecture (EA) practice, collaborating with ITS leadership, Line of Business IT teams, Corporate Security, and operational risk management. Your role will be critical in defining and implementing an architectural vision and strategy that supports the complex business and technological needs of the Bank, both now and into the future.

Principal accountabilities
Architecture & Design: Design and review enterprise architectures for major initiatives, platforms, and products, providing practical guidance on application architecture, integration patterns, and hybrid cloud solutions.
Enterprise Architecture Governance: Define and evolve the Bank’s architecture standards and principles, operating governance forums to ensure alignment across the organization.
Product-Based & Agile-at-Scale Governance: Embed architecture practices within product-centric and agile delivery models, enabling team autonomy while ensuring enterprise coherence through reusable services and shared platforms.
Application Landscape Management: Own and enhance the enterprise application landscape, focusing on rationalization, lifecycle management, and dependency mapping to improve transparency and decision-making.
Hybrid Cloud & Infrastructure Architecture: Define and govern the hybrid cloud architecture, ensuring alignment between application architectures and infrastructure capabilities.
Stakeholder Engagement & Advisory: Act as a trusted advisor to senior IT leadership and business stakeholders, mentoring architecture capabilities and fostering collaboration across the Bank.
Qualifications, skills, and experience
Experience: Recent experiencein enterprise and solution architecture roles within complex environments, with strong expertise in hybrid cloud architectures (on-prem and Azure) and Agile-at-scale delivery.
Education: University degree a Computer Science-related discipline., or the equivalent gained through professional experience.Familiarity with TOGAF frameworks and Azure certifications is desirable.
Technical Skills: Hands-on technical background in application and platform architecture, with knowledge of infrastructure services (compute, storage, network, identity, security). Familiarity with Microsoft technologies (C# .NET, WCF, WPF) and data architecture is a plus.
Leadership & Communication: Proven ability to lead architecture governance, communicate complex concepts to diverse stakeholders, and mentor teams across an organization.
Soft Skills: Excellent communication skills (writtenand oral), collaborative mindset, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
