The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is Europe’s life sciences laboratory – an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and teams at the forefront in the development of cutting-edge technologies and services to the scientific community. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome. Our mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.

EMBL’s Science Education and Public Engagement office (SEPE) leads and coordinates EMBL’s science education programmes and public engagement efforts. Our activities are open to European school science teachers, to young people of all backgrounds aged between 10 and 19 years, and to diverse public audiences. SEPE also offers support and training to EMBL scientists who have an interest in public engagement.  SEPE is part of EMBL‘s International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT). 

As part of EMBL's commitment to science education and public engagement, the Laboratory runs a programme that brings EMBL's cutting-edge research and resources to schools as well as families and the general public. To extend the reach of our science education and outreach initiatives, we are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and well-organised Education and Outreach Officer to be based at EMBL in Heidelberg, Germany. Occasional travel within Europe will be required. The Education and Outreach Officer will report to the Education and Outreach Manager and will work closely with other members of the Science Education and Public Engagement Office.

Your role will include 

  • Developing and adopting educational resources and delivering workshops for young learners
  • Developing and adopting outreach materials for diverse audience needs and environments
  • Supporting the organisation, logistics and delivery of science education and outreach activities including but not limited to events in the Heidelberg region and during the TRaversing ECosystems expedition
  • Supporting increasing the visibility of SEPE programmes, events and resources through promotion campaigns and partnerships, and the associated communication
  • Contributing to the writing of reports and other publications
  • Liaising with internal and external partners, including teachers and researchers at all stages of their career, to build relationships and develop SEPE activities
  • Organising meetings with stakeholders and partners within and outside the organisation
  • Maintaining databases, preparing presentations and reports as necessary

You have 

  • University degree in life sciences or another relevant field and a passion for science communication
  • 1-3 years of experience in a field related to the position
  • Experience of working with schools and teachers and developing educational resources
  • Experience running outreach activities for diverse audiences
  • Strong skills in building and maintaining relationships with teachers, institutions, researchers and other stakeholders
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team being skilled at collaborating with colleagues from different departments or areas of expertise
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English 
  • German native or near-native language skills

You may also have

  • Experience managing online and in-person events, including logistics, scheduling, participant support as well as remote coordination
  • Experience creating compelling promotional content, including social media posts and promotional materials 
  • Experience working in the European context, across multiple countries, cultures and languages
  • Fluency in additional European languages may be an advantage

until 31 December 2028

Salary:

Grade 4 (monthly salary starting at €3.704,83 after tax) + other paid benefits based on personal circumstances
