Safeguarding & Culture Manager, Ukraine

Fixed Term Contract – 6 months

About MAG:

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the role:

MAG Ukraine’s rapid growth and diverse workforce have brought valuable skills and perspectives, while also highlighting the need to strengthen shared understanding of organisational values and humanitarian principles. Ongoing insecurity and funding uncertainty present additional challenges to embedding a consistent organisational culture. MAG is therefore seeking a Safeguarding and Culture Manager on a fixed term basis to support the continued development of a safe working environment, prioritising staff wellbeing, and fostering a cohesive team aligned with MAG’s mission and values.

In this role, you will use your expertise to review and strengthen safeguarding policies, reporting pathways, and practices in line with global standards and the Ukraine context, while developing a long-term framework to embed safe, values-driven ways of working across the programme. The role includes delivering interim training, managing safeguarding concerns using survivor-centred approaches, establishing a safeguarding triage committee, and overseeing investigations where needed. You will champion MAG’s values, advise on HR and wellbeing intersections, monitor and report on safeguarding effectiveness, and represent MAG Ukraine in key safeguarding forums, working across all departments to ensure consistent and effective safeguarding practices throughout the organisation.

About you:

You’re an experienced safeguarding professional with a strong background in organisational culture, values-driven work, or protection roles—ideally gained in humanitarian or challenging contexts—and you’re confident designing training, leading investigations, and applying international safeguarding standards. You’re an exceptional communicator who builds trust at all levels, with strong facilitation, influencing, and organisational skills, and the ability to motivate and support others. You bring integrity, sound judgement, and a survivor-centred mindset, along with resilience, empathy, and a proactive, solutions-focused approach. You’re committed to MAG’s values and humanitarian mission, comfortable working under pressure, and willing to travel throughout the country programme (within security controls) when needed.

About the Ukraine programme:

MAG has been operational in Ukraine since late 2022 and has expanded rapidly in response to growing humanitarian needs. Staffing levels are expected to exceed 500 by early 2026, including approximately 30 international staff. During this period, the operating environment has become increasingly complex, with heightened conflict intensity and the challenges this brings.
