Overview of position

Regional Health Extender is responsible for performing a variety of tasks, as detailed below, to support and monitor provincial extenders’ activities, coordinate with provincial teams for corrective actions, summarize regional reports, etc. These responsibilities, described comprehensively in the sections that follow, do not grant any programmatic or financial authority. Provincial Extenders are selected from Afghan citizens with relevant field experience and expertise and in-depth knowledge of the geographical areas in which they operate, derived from their residency and/or professional experience.

Role objectives

Key Intervention:

  • Strengthen the enabling environment for universal and effective coverage of essential health services

Activity: 

  • Provide technical and monitoring support by the Zonal Offices for the implementation of the HER AF2 and SAFE projects, including monitoring, supportive supervision, regular field visits, coordination, and reporting.

Key tasks:

  • Support the Zonal Health Specialist to conduct situational analysis, gaps and challenges in provinces of the region to develop an improvement plan.

  • Coordinate monthly and quarterly workplan for provincial extenders in the region.

  • Conduct visits to provinces in regions to provide support to and monitor the work of provincial extenders and implementing partners.

  • Collect, review, validate and analyze monthly data from provincial Extenders and implementing partners.

  • Conduct regular follow-up with provinces and implementing partners to address gaps and implement corrective actions.

  • Coordinate with polio teams and other extenders to leverage the resources and optimize the visits.

  • Consolidate and summarize monthly regional-level reports to share with the Zonal Health Specialist/M&E Specialist and National Immunization Specialist.

Deliverables: 

  • Summary situational analysis of provinces in the region.

  • Quarterly and monthly workplan for all provincial extenders submitted to zonal and national offices.

  • Prepare monthly province visit plan and submit to zonal and national office.

  • Summary of monthly reports and data from provincial extenders.

  • Meeting of minutes from participation in provincial review meetings.

  • A consolidated monthly report from the region submitted to the zonal and national offices.

Project reporting

This role will work under the supervision of Health Specialist/M & E Specialist.

Key competencies
  • Degree/diploma in health, medicine, public health, nurse, midwife or related field.

  • A minimum of 3-4 years of experience in health, public health, and field work.

  • Proficiency in data analysis, interpretation and use for improving program performance.

  • Proficiency in local language; English is an asset.

  • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with healthcare professionals and stakeholders.

  • Ability to travel extensively in provinces and remote areas for support and monitoring.

  • Knowledge of MS office and data tools.

Team management

This role has no team management responsibility.
