The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries. We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.
CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work in conjunction with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.
At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org

The COO’s remit is focused on:

- Overseeing CHAI’s 35+ country programs across three geographical regions
- Leading several functional teams, including Program Performance Management, HR, Operations and IT
The Manager will report to the Chief of Staff to the COO, and will work closely with an Associate and Senior Associate in the COO’s office. The role will require operating with a high degree of autonomy while collaborating effectively with leaders across program, country and operational teams.
Note: This position can be offered at either Manager or Senior Manager level, depending on candidate qualifications.
In this role, you will:
- Drive high-priority projects end-to-end – from problem definition to implementation – while managing multiple workstreams involving diverse stakeholder groups
- Design and execute rigorous problem-solving approaches on a range of topics related to internal organizational strategy, such as organizational design, culture and performance
- Dynamically manage multiple competing demands, shifting priorities seamlessly as needed to meet evolving organizational needs
- Build trusted relationships with teams across the organization to provide strategic support on key change initiatives
- Develop executive-ready presentations and communications that are rigorously data-driven and synthesize complex information into clear, compelling narratives
In addition, the role may include direct line management of an Associate-level position. Minimal travel is expected (10-20%) based on project needs.
Competencies
An ideal candidate will be:
- Strategically minded and consultative: Able to connect individual initiatives to broader organizational goals and anticipate second-order implications. Skilled in structured problem-solving and hypothesis-driven analyses.
- Highly independent and results-oriented: Thrives in ambiguous, unstructured environments; able to define problems, drive work forward, and make sound prioritization decisions with limited oversight.
- Analytically rigorous and intellectually curious: Comfortable with both quantitative and qualitative analysis; able to draw insights from diverse data sources and challenge assumptions with thoughtful inquiry.
- Executive-ready and an excellent communicator: Polished in interactions with senior leaders; able to distill complexity into crisp, tailored narratives in both written and verbal formats.
- Diplomatically influential and adaptable: Adept at navigating complex stakeholder dynamics with cultural sensitivity, building alignment across teams, and remaining effective amid shifting priorities.
- 6–10 years of relevant work experience in demanding, fast-paced and results-oriented environments; prior management consulting experience strongly preferred
- Proven track record of independently leading complex, cross-functional strategic initiatives from conception to completion in ambiguous environments
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with demonstrated ability to structure ill-defined problems and synthesize insights from diverse data sources
- Experience working effectively in global, multicultural contexts, with ability to collaborate remotely across geographies and time zones
- Capacity to operate with high autonomy in unstructured, rapidly evolving situations while maintaining strong stakeholder relationships
- Prior people management experience
