Overview

Jhpiego seeks a One Health Advisor to support for a five-year $40 million USAID Global Health Security (GHS) activity in Guatemala. The flagship GHS Activity is to designed to provide tailored and targeted technical support in areas of highest need, in partnership with key government, civil society, private sector and community actors and entities across Guatemala to strengthen One Health systems capabilities to build resilience and self-reliance to prevent, detect, mitigate, and respond to the health and economic impacts of emerging infectious disease outbreaks.

The One Health Advisor will be included in the project’s core team and work closely with the Technical Director to contribute to the design, implementation, and monitoring of the project’s One Health approaches and frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Design and oversee the project’s One Health strategy and frameworks; including performing epidemiological analyses, risk assessments, and forecasting health threats requiring One Health interventions. 
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for the implementation of One Health approaches and activities across implementation, including developing and reviewing national and sub-national One Health strategies, frameworks, and curriculum  
  • Build capacity of country-level technical and MERL staff, ensuring communication and coordination among animal and human health consortium partners at global and country levels
  • Coordinate inter-country technical excellence, coordination and collaboration in evolving One Health methodologies and best practices
  • Provide technical assistance to government and local partner staff to strengthen national and/or regional capacity and structures to efficiently operationalize One Health activities and manage spillovers and/or emerging infectious diseases.
  • Engage and coordinate with relevant sectors and disciplines including animal health, wildlife, environment, public, academia, research and private sectors at global, regional, and national levels to expand the integration of the project’s One Health approaches and best practices.
  • Synthesize learnings for internal program improvement and best practices, and facilitate the dissemination of lessons learned in GHS/One Health to both internal and external audiences, including production, submission, and/or presentations, coordinating with other projects within the organization, write success stories, etc.
  • Work in close collaboration with MERL staff to provide expertise and overall technical and programmatic guidance on operationalizing and coordinating national and regional One Health approaches.
  • Represent the Project in key forums and technical working groups to share project best practices, lessons learned and recommendations from One Health CLA activities.
  • Contribute to developing work plans and annual budgets for project activities and local office costs
  • Ensure that USAID resources are appropriately directed to project priorities and are in line with project work plans
  • Mentor and support a team of highly qualified staff and align their efforts in concert with project goals to ensure rapid and sustainable results

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master’s) in veterinary science, epidemiology, nursing, medicine or other health science
  • At least 9 to 10 years’ related experience at national or regional level in One Health-related activities (epidemiology, data analysis and use, risk assessments), animal health, surveillance, animal health, multisectoral coordination [animal, food, agriculture], etc.
  • Experience collaborating with government leadership and coordinating other multi-sectoral working groups and implementing partners, non-governmental/civil society organizations and multilateral funding agencies
  • Coaching and mentoring experience for capacity strengthening of key government personnel and partners
  • Proficiency in analysis, interpretation and visualization of data
  • Previous direct supervisory experience of professional and support staff and experience hiring and supervising personnel
  • Demonstrated skills in training, transfer of skills and development of competencies
  • Proven ability to multitask across various planning and implementation processes within a demanding environment
  • Strong organizational skills and a team player and excellent skills in facilitation, team building, and coordination
  • Excellent diplomacy skills and ability to establish and maintain interpersonal and professional relationships with USAID, host-country counterparts and representatives from other key stakeholders such as NGOs, CSOs, and the private sector
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with full suite of Office 365
  • Excellent verbal, written, speaking skills with proficiency and fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English.
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally where required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working on USAID-funded projects
  • Experience in development of protocols and implementation of public health evaluations
  • Field Epidemiology Training Program experience
