Background
Population Services International (PSI) is a global nonprofit organization working to achieve consumer-powered healthcare — people-centered health systems that ensure quality, affordable care wherever and whenever it is needed. Our origins in sexual and reproductive health have grown into a broader mission. Today, we work with the public and private sectors as well as local communities, prioritizing people’s voice and choice and developing solutions to meet their essential health needs. Over the past five decades, we have helped push boundaries, break taboos, set trends, and develop innovative solutions to complex health challenges.
Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH) is a critical yet often neglected issue affecting over 300 million people menstruating daily worldwide. Approximately 500 million women and girls face challenges managing menstruation due to inadequate sanitation, healthcare, agency, and the stigma surrounding it. In Nigeria, women and girls encounter numerous obstacles, including lack of education, stigma, unaffordable menstrual products, and the absence of supportive national policies.
PSI Nigeria is implementing ‘MH-NoW’, a three-year project addressing challenges related to easy access to affordable and quality menstrual hygiene products and services. The goal of the project is to enhance menstrual health and hygiene in Nigeria by increasing access to comprehensive information and affordable menstrual products. The MH-NoW project seeks to:
1. Provide comprehensive menstrual health education.
2. Facilitate access to affordable menstrual hygiene products and services.
3. Create supportive and enabling environments for MH that includes addressing cultural barriers, government ownership, subsidy refinement, stimulation of local production and distribution of re-usable menstrual products and economic empowerment of girls & women).
The MH-NoW project seeks not only to educate and raise awareness but also to shift behaviors and attitudes around menstrual health. The communication materials will play a crucial role in this effort by delivering clear, engaging, and culturally relevant messages that break the stigma around menstruation and encourage healthy practices.
