Overview of position

Under the overall supervision of the Head of Sub Office in Yola & direct supervision of the Migration Health Officer & Migration Health Assistant (Data & Reporting), in coordination with the Health Facility In Charge (Head) Coordinator in the LGA the incumbent will support the overall health activities, service delivery, development & coordination of all of the BHA project. S / he shall coordinate planned health outreaches, coordinate training planning / logistics, collate patient / hospital data / records. S / he shall provide leadership & guidance in establishing the highest standards of care & ensuring optimal delivery of quality care in line with international best practices.

Role objectives

S / he will undertake the below tasks:

  • Responsible for coordinating all field activities related to the project in the designated heath facility.

  • Ensure survivors of gender based violence are timely identified & provided counselling & other appropriate response services.

  • Ensure relevant referral forms are in place, timely referral of SGBV cases is implemented accordingly & coordinate monthly meetings including, parent’s forum & child protection committee.

  • Facilitate the assessment of the living conditions of SGBV survivor’s communities & participate in the development of appropriate response to the needs of SGBV.

  • Facilitate the involvement of SGBV & the community (leaders & parents) in the PSS activities & document the progress made.

  • Follow up the preparation & implementation of case action plan.

  • Through working with the child protection committees identify potential foster families for unaccompanied & separated children in collaboration with the social workers & community leaders, train the families & do weekly follow up with the children & the families separately.  

  • Organize & facilitate positive parenting skills training (parenting without violence common approach) weekly sessions.

  • Assist the child rights clubs to demonstrate to the community & the concerning body about protection concerns that children are facing while living in the camp & promote the participation of children in all matters affecting their lives.

  • Organize & lead psychosocial support activities at child friendly spaces.

  • Work closely with the Child Protection Officer in the celebration of international events days & other awareness raising sessions.

  • Adhere & fully abide by the child protection code of conduct.

  • Ensure that the minimum standards of humanitarian relief are maintained in accordance with the minimum standards for child protection in humanitarian settings & the sphere standard.

  • Document, summarize & share monthly report of his activities to his / her supervisor.

  • Participate in design & formulation of unit policies, SOPs & clinical pathways.

  • Performing other applicable tasks & duties as assigned by the Head of Health Facility, Supervisor, Medical Officer / National Migration Health Officer.

  • Abiding by the hospital rules, protocols & standard practices.

  • High interpersonal & communication skills demand will need to be able to fit easily into a complex & highly operative team of various cultural backgrounds.

  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Project reporting
  • The selected candidate will directly report to the Head of Health Facility, Migration Health Assistant (Data & Reporting) & to the Head of Sub Office Yola.

Key competencies
  • University degree in nursing, midwife, public health with a minimum of three years relevant clinical experience.

  • A valid license to practice nursing in Nigeria.

  • Previous experience in carrying out awareness or community based EORE activities or similar.

  • Previous experience in data reporting & / or using participatory techniques to gather information in at-risk communities.

  • Relevant experience in community based facilitation & community mobilization.

  • Experience of developing good relationships with people & working in a participatory manner with groups of different ages, statuses & backgrounds.

  • Previous experience living & working in a cross cultural, multi sector team environment in northeast Nigeria.

  • Experience working with rural communities from a variety of different ethnic groups.

  • Excellent technical skills with at least a minimum of three years of continuous practice post graduation, registered to practice in Nigeria & with a valid registration license in hospital or health setting.

  • Proven ability to establish & maintain strong working relations with relevant government counterparts, international organizations & private sector entities. 

  • Previous work experience with UN, international organizations & companies would be an advantage preferably within the United Nations (UN) or within the international humanitarian sector.

  • Training & experience in ANC, SRHR, first aid & emergency health, immunizations, mental health, communicable diseases, laboratory testing or public health is an advantage.

  • Computer literacy required: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access).

  • Good knowledge of clinical care especially in the primary or secondary health care settings.

  • Good communication skills & proven ability in working in a team.

  • Counselling, health promotion, public health or migration health skills / experience is a plus.

  • Self motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision, ability to work with tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain detail, accuracy & confidentiality.

  • Fluency in English (oral & written) required & working knowledge of the local language is desired.
