For over half a century, Tanzania has been a country of asylum, hosting one of the largest refugee populations in Africa.Currently, the country hosts approximately 287,903 Burundian and Congolese refugees, many of whom arrived in 2015 as the crisis in Burundi increased. To date, refugees continue to co-exist with the host communities in Kigoma region expressing multiple reasons and needs. Within this context, IRC provides protection and basic assistance in the areas of Safety (comprises of Protection and Rule of Law, Women Protection and Empowerment, and Child Protection), Health (mental health and psychosocial support services and reproductive health), and Education.

Job Overview:

The SRH Nurse plays a vital role in delivering integrated sexual and reproductive health services within IRC's humanitarian response. This position involves the provision of maternal and child healthcare, family planning, and community outreach to improve the well-being of women, children, and families. The role also includes capacity building for local health teams and contributing to the integration of GBV prevention in SRH services.

Major Responsibilities:

Provision of Comprehensive SRH Services:

  • Deliver antenatal, postnatal, and family planning services, ensuring comprehensive reproductive healthcare.
  • Support safe deliveries, including essential newborn care, in line with Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) standards.
  • Facilitate maternal and child health assessments, including growth monitoring, immunizations, and nutrition.
  • Provide counselling and education to women and girls on sexual and reproductive health, GBV prevention, and related services.

Integrated GBV and SRH Services:

  • Promote and facilitate the integration of gender-based violence response in SRH services.
  • Implement GBV-sensitive healthcare practices, ensuring dignity, confidentiality, and safety for survivors.
  • Work collaboratively with Women-Led Organizations (WLOs) and community health workers to promote respectful, gender-sensitive care.

Capacity Building and Training:

  • Participate in training sessions and capacity building for local health staff, ensuring adherence to quality standards in SRH and GBV service provision.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer and mentoring for community health workers and WLOs to enhance local leadership in SRH and GBV prevention and response.

Program Support:

  • Assist in planning, implementing, and monitoring reproductive health programs in collaboration with program staff.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of service delivery, patient records, and timely reporting on key indicators.

Key Working Relationships:

  • Position Reports to: Head Nurse.
  • Position directly supervises: Assistant nurses (incentive workers), community health workers.
  • Other Internal and/or external contacts:Local health facility staff, community health volunteers
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Educational Requirements:Diploma in Nursing and Registered with the Nursing Council of Tanganyika with a valid practicing license.
  • Experience: Minimum three years’ work experience in maternal and child healthcare, preferably in primary or humanitarian settings.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

  • Demonstrated experience in SRH and GBV service delivery, with a focus on integrating care for women and girls in crisis
  • Strong skills in community engagement and patient counselling.

Language/Travel: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Swahili, Kirundi is an added advantage.

Working Environment: Security level yellow - The situation in most of the country is calm. Some parts of Kigoma region experience insecurity-highway banditry.
