The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an intergovernmental organisation committed to advancing security of energy supply, economic growth and environmental sustainability through energy policy co-operation. The IEA operates as an autonomous body within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Both the OECD and the IEA seek opportunities to work with an increasing number of non-members of growing importance to the world economy.

The Directorate of Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks takes the lead on energy modelling, sustainability, encompassing energy technology policy and energy-related climate change policy. The Directorate is responsible for major analytical reports including long-term scenarios, technology roadmaps and other high-level publications including the World Energy Outlook report.

Within the Directorate, the Tracking Sustainable Transitions Unit is responsible for several key analytical areas and a principal contributor to flagship reports such as the World Energy Outlook. The Unit leads modelling and analysis on a variety of topics at the intersection of energy transitions and broader economic, social, and environmental dynamics. Key topics include energy access, energy transitions in Africa, energy employment, affordability, climate resilience, and policy tracking. There are around 20 people in the Unit.

Job Description

Role

The Young Associate would work on projects to help design energy roadmaps, financing plans, and carry-out other analytical outputs related to energy access and energy transitions in developing countries. They will also support on tasks in the Unit’s other analytical areas to enable them to expand their knowledge across a range of energy topics. They will report directly to the Head of the Tracking Sustainable Transition Unit.

Main Responsibilities

Research, analysis and drafting

  • Research and data gathering on issues relating to energy access and energy transitions, notably in Africa, and preparation of draft sections for flagship IEA analytical outputs, including the IEA’s World Energy Outlook, and other publications related to energy access and energy transitions in Africa.
  • Development of country-based work on energy, including developing energy models, carrying out long-term energy scenario design and modelling, drafting reports, and interacting with government officials to produce policy-relevant outputs, including government plans that inform long-term energy strategies and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
  • Preparation of model inputs and analysis of model outputs, including assisting with data management, data processing and programming.

Operational support, stakeholder liaison and other tasks

  • Draft talking points, speeches, and other briefing materials for the Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director and Directors on the topics of energy access and energy transition in Africa for high-level meetings and events.
  • Coordinate and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders from across government, industry and academia related to the Directorate’s work on Africa and energy access and identify strategies to most effectively leverage these relationships to support the Directorate’s objectives.
  • Provided analytical and logistical support towards the organisation of high-level Ministerial-level meetings and events hosted by the IEA focused on energy transitions in emerging market and developing economies.

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Profile

Academic Background

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, economics, technology, sustainability, or a related discipline (graduation date between 1 January 2024 and 1 September 2025). Applications from candidates who already hold or are enrolled in a Master’s, PhD, or equivalent degree will not be considered.
  • Coursework in energy-related aspects of economics, climate and environment, policy, sustainable development, data science, or investment is required.

Skills

  • Strong energy background and interest in energy and sustainability, particularly in emerging market and developing economies.
  • Quantitative skills, preferably with experience in programming, as well as very strong research and analytical abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly drafting.

Languages

  • Fluency in one of the two OECD official languages (English and French) and a knowledge of, or willingness to learn, the other.
