BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 30,000 refugees from over 65 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 1,000 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 2,500 refugees and asylees.
INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW: The Health and Wellness Intern works in close coordination with the Health and Wellness Coordinator, refugee clients, and local healthcare providers to coordinate and advocate for the healthcare and preventative health needs of refugee clients of the International Rescue Committee. Please note that all internship positions are unpaid.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Ensure any urgent medication needs are resolved and that clients know how to fill and refill prescriptions at an accessible pharmacy.
- Assist in reviewing medical examination forms for new arrival cases classified as high medical alert and coordinate their necessary linkage to appropriate care.
- Assist in coordinating the initial health screening of new arrival cases at the local health departments where the clients reside.
- Assist clients to become self-sufficient in navigating and utilizing transportation resources such as Medicaid taxi and Marta bus system.
- Assistance with data entry, analysis, and administrative tasks relevant to health services provided.
- Assist the Health Program Supervisor with scheduling and coordinating ongoing medical and health appointments for clients.
- Comply with all policies, procedures, and protocols of the agency, placing importance on client confidentiality.
- Refer clients to any other services that may be eligible for or interested in receiving internally at IRC and externally with partnering organizations.

- Current undergrad, graduate student, or recently graduated student with a focus in Public Health or a related field preferred.
- Strong relationship building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships.
- Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
- Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
- Understanding and ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding client information.
- Flexible, resourceful, and collaborative when working independently and in a team setting.
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written; proficiency in language(s) spoken by client group is desired.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a personal, insured vehicle.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Must submit intern hours on volunteer portal.
- Must pass a background check.
- Commitment of 15 hours minimum per week for 3 consecutive months.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States. Please note that we are unable to provide sponsorship for a US work authorization.
This is a on-site/in-person role. This role will report to the Health & Wellness Supervisor.
The internship will be filled on a rolling basis. We will continue to accept applications until December 2, 2024, or until the position is filled, whichever occurs first. Internship will begin the week of January 20th, 2025.
