CIP is implementing a four-year project on Market-led Transformation of the Root and Tuber Crops Subsector in Malawi (RTC-MARKET) program, 2023 – 2027. The goal of the project is to sustainably increase the contribution of the RTC subsector to the national economy, food and nutrition security, incomes, and employment creation through commercialization of the subsector. It aims to transform and commercialize the RTC subsector by increasing private sector participation in the RTC value chains. The RTC-Market Project plans to reach at least 60,000 value chain actors with market-led interventions; create at least 4,000 jobs mainly targeting women and youths; etc. by end of the four years. The project will be implemented in the following districts: Nsanje, Mulanje, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Zomba, Mangochi and Salima for OFSP; Dedza, Ntcheu, Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzimba, Mchinji, Dowa and Ntchisi for potato; and Mzimba, Lilongwe, Kasungu, Blantyre, Salima, Zomba, Nkhota-kota and Nkhata-Bay for cassava.
Objectives:
The RTC-Market Project would like to engage a Communication Consultant to:
• Work with the project teams, partners and the regional communication specialist in compiling blog stories about project activities, achievements, short and medium-term outputs and impacts for different stakeholders, media outlets and audience to reflect the work successes and impact of the projects.
• In collaboration with the Project Manager, champion the planning, design, and implementation of all communication, media outreach and public relations activities to stakeholders’ engagement and project activities and achievements.
• Edit, proofread and summarize project documents, and write articles about project work, as requested.
• Liaise with HQ and Regional Specialists in CPAD (e.g. communication specialist, editors) for producing, publishing, and printing of project materials.
• Maintain a record of partnership communications and assist to prepare and organize outreach programs and activities.
• Work with appropriate media outlets (radio, television, newspaper) to enhance visibility of CIP Malawi activities.
• Contribute to the CIP-wide communications community of practice, sharing and communicating work updates and lessons, participate in department learning, reviewing, and planning activities and ensure that these activities follow the center’s standards and agreed channels.
• Perform any other tasks from time to time as may be assigned by the chair of the Malawi Communication and Visibility Committee.
• Translate ideas and concepts into effective communication media including publications media using innovative communication tools.
• Support preparation, production and dissemination of project related material including print, and electronic media.
Deliverables:
• Success story of donor (Embassy of Ireland) funded project in Malawi
• Document success stories of at least 10 farmers/farmer groups and shared using different modes of communication
• Engaging partners, to develop and disseminate visibility and communication materials
• 3 comprehensive documentary success stories on the 3 RTC-components (Sweetpotato, potato, and cassava) specifically on Embassy of Ireland funding.
Requirements

I. Qualifications/special skills
- Bachelor’s degree in communication studies or journalism/mass communication
- Experience in developing web materials in the form of articles, reports, briefs (policy), posters, information packets, and other project documentation
- At least 3 years’ communications experience with donor funded projects
- Good public relations especially with the media world
- Excellent skills in communication and visibility activities
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills
II. Time frame
- The successful Candidate(s) will be placed on roster and will remain eligible for consideration for a period of 12 months, after which their status may be reviewed based on the needs of CIP.
