Job Summary:
The Generator Technician is responsible for performing maintenance, diagnostics, and both shop & field repairs on generators of all makes and models and a variety of sizes, as well as providing excellent customer service, and keeping accurate records.
Under the direction of the Facilities Maintenance Manager, the Generator Technician maintains all the generators on North or South camps, as well as the allocated remote site generators, and supervises the teams of Egyptian National mechanics provided.
Responsibilities:
- The Generator Technician will be responsible for supervising the operation and maintenance of the allocated generators in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, in line with the Facilities Maintenance Manager’s instructions ensuring that all work is performed in accordance with MFO’s safety rules and operating procedures.
- Organizes preventive and corrective maintenance and repairs, modifications, and minor improvements. Perform full diagnostic testing, oil sampling, and any other tests required to determine the state of the generator engines, every three months or on the recommended hours from the manufacturer. Be prepared to perform a complete overhaul of any generator engine, within his sphere of responsibility.
- Performs thorough diagnostics, repair, full maintenance schedules, and oversees all Roads and Grounds Department’s small plant, as reflected on Roads and Grounds Small Plant Asset Register such as but not limited to, air compressors, vibrating compactors, concrete mixers, small rollers, trimmers et.al., and other equipment such as newly acquired small units added through procurement from time to timer. Supports MFO hydraulic barriers in maintenance, service, and repairs. This does not include vehicles and machinery that fall within the VMF’s sphere of responsibility.
- Supervises Egyptian National work force to carry out the maintenance work required.
- Develops plans for generator improvement, including limited modifications not affecting Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) standards and creating required bills of material. Limited improvements to be verified against Supplier OEM standards and where uncertainty exists contact the manufacturer for inputs and incorporate manufacturer expertise and recommendation into improvements.
- Responsible for supervising the workshops provided. This includes maintaining a register of specialist tools, restricting use to authorized personnel only, arranging for requisitions to be raised for new specialist tools when required, and ensuring an adequate level of spare tools is held for maintaining the generators and small plant.
- Provides mentoring and technical training to appointed subordinates as needed. Maintains a record of training provided and informs the Facilities Maintenance Manager of all training completed monthly, specifying training content and personnel trained. Training may be recorded using a SAP work order with a ‘training’ operation.
- Ensures that workshops and generator areas are maintained in a safe, clean, and tidy condition.
- Maintains accurate maintenance and repair records of all work accomplished and ensures that such records are entered into SAP. Access to SAP is available at the FEO Office for capturing progress. The initial step will be to capture accurate maintenance and repairs onto an Excel Spreadsheet for easy inclusion into SAP with the help of FEO Admin Staff.
- Required to cover a yearly 24 hour “on call” duty to provide the Camp with electrical power.
- Maintains an ‘accident book’ for the power generation staff (including assigned Egyptian Nationals) and records all injuries requiring any medical attention. The book should contain the circumstances of the incident, if treatment is required by Force Medical Staff at a Dispensary.
- The Generator Technician, as part of the FEO team, might be required to perform or assist with other tasks, as requested by the FMM or FEO. These tasks will be both reasonable and within the skillsets of this job description, to ensure that in doing so, there is no contravention of any MFO H&S policies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints; prepare rough sketches of work and estimates of material and labor; select proper materials to be used; work cooperatively with others; skillfully use the proper tools.
- Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions of the Generator Mechanical trade; ability to problem solve, plan and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
- A basic understanding of electricity so that they can adhere to safety regulations when working with electrical components. The technician may need to alter systems or replace machines to match the levels of power required and avoid shortages or other issues.
- A hands-on approach with the required manual dexterity to perform the work.
- Must hold a valid Home Country driver’s license.Excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Administrative skills including proficiency with MS Office Suite, knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning tools, and the ability to learn basic SAP.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Must be able to work without supervision and always look to develop procedures through continuous improvement.
- Must be fluent in English, a working knowledge of Arabic/Spanish would be a plus.
Education and Experience:
- 10+ years’ experience within the service industry involving Generator and Small Plant Mechanical repair, fault finding, planned maintenance, load testing and use.
- 3+ years in supervisory or managerial role in a relevant field.
- Must have recognized mechanic qualifications from Home Country with experience in Generator Mechanical operations.
- Qualified or experienced on Caterpillar ET and Caterpillar SIS.
- Demonstrable experience or qualifications in health and safety.

Conditions of Employment
- This position carries an annual total salary of USD60,594 gross.
- A two-year, renewable, unaccompanied-status contract including free housing, meals, worldwide health insurance and recreational facilities is offered. May be eligible for tax free status.
- Any appointment/extension of appointment is subject to the MFO HR Directives and other relevant internal rules. Any offer of employment with the MFO is conditional upon certification by the MFO Medical Adviser that the person concerned is medically fit to perform the specific inherent requirements of the position offered. To confirm an offer from the MFO the successful candidate will be required to undergo a medical examination.
- Any extension of employment contracts is subject to various elements including the following: continuing need of the functions and satisfactory conduct and performance.
