Context

Waste Management Team, Urban Basic Services Section (UBSS) of UN-Habitat is mandated to improve the access to sustainable waste management services by improving policies and guidelines in partnership with local, regional and national authorities, enhancing enabling environment for promoting investments in sustainable waste management services with a focus on the urban poor and increasing coverage of sustainable waste management services in communities. The UNV will be based in the Tunisia office and support the UBSS and Tunisia office in managing municipal solid waste management related projects including data collection, project development, drafting documents, and other waste related tasks in the countries where Tunisia office supervising Sousse and Beni Khaled where there is already ongoing projects, but also in the 12 others Tunisians cities member of ACCP. The UN Volunteer will be guided by waste management team of UBSS and Tunisia office in his/her day-to-day assignments. The identified focus areas are the African Clean Cities Platform (ACCP) and other relevant waste management work.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Tunisia office and waste management expert in the Urban Basic Services Section (UBSS), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Coordinate and liaise waste management related works that Tunisa office covers and the African Clean Cities Platform does.
• Support the project development of MSWM in Africa, in coordination with Tunisia Office and ACCP / UBSS, including drafting concept notes, making research, providing translations among English, French and Arabic, etc.
• Support Tunisia office and ACCP to reach out to the potential donors for resource mobilisation.
• Support Tunisia office and ACCP to increase ACCP member countries and cities as well as ACCP Associate Members.
• Support in capacity development of ACCP members for Waste Wise Cities Tool application.
• Identify opportunities to develop innovative waste management projects to boost circular economy in collaboration with national and county governments, UN agencies and other relevant entities (UNEP, UNDP….).
• Carry out assessment to identify needs for support on waste management interventions using existing tools (Waste Wise Cities Tool).
• Contribute to the normative works in the sector of waste management by documenting best practices, lessons learnt across UNHABITAT and across regions (Regional Office for Africa and Arab States), in collaboration with relevant divisions (UBS, Innovation division).
• Support the team in drafting newsletters, web stories, event flyers, awareness raising materials, etc.
• Support the team for creating further synergies between Tunisia office’s projects and ACCP projects
• Expand and maintain good partnership with stakeholders including international organizations, governments, development corporations, development banks, private sectors, etc.
• Supporting implementation of existing waste management projects and program in Africa
• Any other duty that may contribute to more exposure to UN-Habitat’s engagement on Tunisia office’s programmes and waste management.
