Mission and objectives

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the leading development organization in Georgia. Since 1993, UNDP has been part of the country’s success in many fields, including its democratic reforms, inclusive growth, conflict transformation, green solutions and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN identity ensures neutrality and respect for the country’s control over the future. Transparency and accountability of the operation make UNDP the trusted partner for national and international development stakeholders. And UNDP’s wide, international presence keeps the organization close to development issues, resources and thinking.

UNDP seeks to promote the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and forge partnerships with the national institutions, civil society and private sector to assist Georgia in four major areas:
• Democratic governance
• Economic development
• Environment & energy
• Crisis prevention & recovery

UNDP advocates for and support gender equality in all its activities.

Context

The South Caucasus sub-region presents a complex environment with several protracted conflicts (Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Karabakh) that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The countries’ ability to successfully complete their transition in terms of governance models and achieve their developmental objectives have been negatively affected by the unresolved nature of these conflicts.

The lack of constructive deliberation and the prevalence of negative discourses is exacerbated by the growing divides between communities that lived peacefully together in the past. Recent escalation around the Karabakh conflict deepens further the entrenched positions of the involved sides and increases the need to further monitor the indicators for better informing early warning and conflict prevention, incorporating conflict sensitivity and peacebuilding into UN programming.

To address these challenges the Peace and Development Advisor (PDA) programme seeks services of the UNV to assist the sub-regional PDA team in the implementation of the programme activities especially taking into account the recent developments in the region.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Regional UN Peace and Development Advisor (RPDA), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
• Support the PDA team in programme implementation.
• Assist in data collection, management and analysis.
• Provide technical support to the PDA South Caucasus team
• Provide support in monitoring and reporting of programme activities (grants, travel to regions, compiling reports, etc.)
• Collecting data for Crisis Risk Dashboard (CRD) for the 3 South Caucasus countries.
• Any other tasks assigned by the supervisor.
