Introduction

The Regional Programming Unit (RPU) of the ILO Regional Office for Africa (RO-Africa), based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. RO-Africa has overall political and management responsibility for the operations of the ILO's network of Country Offices (COs) and Decent Work Technical Support Teams (DWTs) covering 54 countries in the African region. The RPU provides strategic advice and support to ILO regional management and offices on the design, implementation, monitoring and reporting of ILO activities in the region. The Unit also provides support in programming resources under all sources of funding in line with results-based management principles and to the design, monitoring and evaluation of development cooperation programmes and projects in the region.

Learning areas

As an intern in Programme Management, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas such as planning and monitoring. The ILO offers a comprehensive learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. This includes: 

1. Skill Development:

  • Project Management: Interns learn to develop and manage project plans, timelines, and budgets, ensuring alignment with ILO’s strategic goals. Plan and conduct analyses of specific programme proposals and activities to ensure conformity with the organization’s programme and budgetary objectives. 
  • Data Analysis: Interns gain proficiency in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E): Interns understand how to create M&E frameworks, track project progress, and evaluate outcomes to measure impact.

2. Practical Experience:

  • Real-World Application: Interns apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects, gaining insights into the complexities of international labour issues.
  • Problem-Solving: Interns develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by addressing challenges in project implementation.

3. Professional Growth:

  • Networking: Interns build professional relationships with ILO staff, other interns, and external stakeholders.
  • Career Exploration: Interns explore different career paths within the fields of planning, monitoring, and international development.

4. Contribution to Organizational Goals:

  • Support Projects: Interns contribute to the successful planning, execution, and monitoring of ILO projects, helping to advance the organization’s mission.
  • Innovative Solutions: Interns bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the organization, enhancing project outcomes.


You would be gaining experience in working with the staff members of the Regional Programming Unit who are involved in the following tasks:
design, implementation, monitoring and reporting of ILO activities in the region.

  • support in programming resources under all sources of funding in line with results-based management principles.
  • monitoring and evaluation.
  • preparation and review of Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCPs) and regional and sub-regional decent work programmes.

 

Interns develop essential skills, gain valuable experience, and contribute to meaningful projects, preparing them for successful careers in international development and labour standards.


Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.
 

Required profile

The position assists regional management in planning and monitoring results and resource allocations across all offices in the region. The incumbent will provide support to the preparation and review of Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCPs) and regional and sub-regional decent work programmes, as well as to Office-wide programmatic exercises such as the preparation of the biennial programme and budget and programme implementation report.

Education

  • Economics, Statistics, Social Sciences, Business Administration
  • The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago

Experience

  • Any relevant work experience and knowledge of IT would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of statistical software, experience in research and data analysis would be an advantage

Languages

  • Working (both oral and written) knowledge of at least one of the ILO’s official languages (English, French, Spanish)

Competencies

  • Be adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, good communication skills and be able to work in a team.

Selection process:

 

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), field offices will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department or field office within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the field office for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

 

Stipend:

 

As an intern in the field, you will receive a monthly stipend from the ILO based on the cost of living in the area of the duty station, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive the appropriate stipend per month. Your travel to the duty station will be at your own expense.

 

Insurance:

 

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
